appearance
A lithe smoke tabby she-cat with large ears and green eyes.
Bast is a slender and graceful figure. Long legged and thin, she hardly looks like a threat. And yet she commands attention. She exudes elegance and poise, carrying herself with an aura of royalty.
Her coat is short and fluffy. A mottled mixture of black and dark gray cover most of her fur, with lighter gray occasionally popping up. A splash of color comes from her green eyes. However the most notable feature of her face is her ears, large and tall atop her head.

description
Bastet was born to royalty, and she loved it. Unlike her more noble elder brothers, Horus and Anubis, she reveled in the power and prestige of her birthright. Of course the lower ranks should serve her family, that was their purpose. And hers was to lord over them.
Or rather, that was Horus's eventual role. As third born, she didn't have nearly as many expectations placed upon her. Just a bit more prestige and a higher place in the pecking order. Yet with neither of her elder brothers wishing to lord over their subjects, Bastet was quick to fill the power vacuum once she was old enough.
Even when it came time for her to learn how to do things and help out, Bastet was drawn to more powerful roles. Hunting, there were others for that. But fighting and medicine? There was power there. Especially in medicine and healing.
Learning all the various herbs and methods for applying them was a little dull at times, and she did hate dirtying her paws, but it proved a valuable skill. Cats needed healers, trusted and relied on them. Felt indebted to them.
Akhet was one such cat who found himself indebted to Bastet. She saved him from a spar gone wrong, healed his wounds and won his loyalty. After all, why shouldn't she be praised, cared for, and beloved by those she saved?
Not long after Horus up and decided to leave their family. Bastet was horrified. Why leave a life of luxury and power and influence? The world was at his paws, and he turned it down? Why?
She certainly wouldn't have given it up. Not for anything. As Anubis starts to fill his new role, she wonders if it will break him to. While she didn't want to see another brother gone, she certainly wouldn't mind being the clear choice for next leader. Akhet agrees, ever loyal to her cause.
He even helps train her in fight moves. Bastet views it as a fun distraction, a way to show off and have eyes on her. She's good at sparing, but best at putting on a show. And by now she has quite a few cats willing to roll over and exaggerate her prowess if it'll earn her favor.
Bastet truly begins to believe she might pull enough favor to upstage both her remaining siblings. If she's the only one who wants to rule, who revels in it, why shouldn't she? With each passing day her influence grows.
Death cuts her ambitions short.
Strangers invade, wrecking havoc on her home. The scent of blood and the sound of screams fill the air. Bastet can barely move, barely breath. She's never fought to kill, never faced someone truly willing to hurt her.
It's Akhet who saves her from the fight, throwing himself at an intruder who had her cornered. It's Akhet who grabs her scruff and drags her away from the fight. It's Akhet who shields her from seeing more than a single glance of her mother's body.
Eventually Bastet finds the strength to run on her own two paws, fleeing with her savior at her side. Behind her everything she worked for is destroyed.
It's dawn before the duo stop running, collapsing into a shallow cave, paws torn and bloodied from the escape.
Even when night falls, Bastet can barely find it in herself to move. Her world was shattered, gone in an instant. All her efforts were made in vain. All but one. Akhet is by her side, ever loyal. He finds them food, finds the herbs she needs to heal their wounds.
He's all she has. And she's all he has.
Neither of them mention their families, mention the loss. Bastet picks a direction at random, and the two set off. Most of their conversations are just orders and replies. Despite her birth meaning nothing now, Akhet still follows.
For a brief bit Bastet has dreams of rebuilding, of finding new cats and new land. Being a ruler once more. But other cats have their groups and so many lands are already claimed.
Every now and then a stay cat will join, often in need of Bastet's healing. But they never quite understand what she wants from them. Some consider offering loyalty, but none to the extent of her old followers. She wants to be served, adored, and they want to be peers. Eventually they all leave, often quietly in the night.
She slowly and silently abandons her dreams of being royalty once more. Each passing moons chips away at her resolve. At least she has Akhet.
It's rather lonely, trying to lead a group of two. Akhet's loyalty is unquestionable, but they both maintain the distance of leader and subject.
Sometimes she wants to destroy that distance.
"You can call me Bast. Not Bastet. It's a gift, for your loyalty." A nickname, the best way she can think of to try and shorten that distance a little. Something just for Akhet.
It doesn't shorten the distance much, not at first. But slowly it seems to wear away at the walls between them. The two only have each other, after all. Their temporary dens move closer and closer, they start to share prey instead of her eating first.
It's not enough for her.
But it's a start.
Time helps bring them slowly closer. But it also brings a startling realization. Counting the moons reveals that she's spent more time as one of a pair than she spent as royalty in the mountains.
Even her memories of being adored, being someone important, begin to fade. So much of that time was spent as a kit, mewling and barely aware. Why did it have to end so soon?
After a particularly harsh winter, she starts to realize just how far gone her dreams of royalty are. It's hard for two cats alone. It would be easier if she could swallow her pride and join another group as a member.
Eugh.
The valley she and Akhet wound up in had a few potentially promising groups. Eventually she settled on trying to join the Kingdom, a new group. Her medical skills would be of use.
It was more difficult than expected to get Akhet to agree to both joining. Even after all this time, he wasn't quite ready to give up on her dreams. As sweet as it was, she had to disagree. They'd tried and failed before. This new group could keep them both safe. And if it fell apart, then they could rebuild it later on.
