appearance
A long legged pale gray tabby tom with yellow-green eyes.
Hailstar blends into his clan. Another long legged, gray furred cat to fit the mold. He's slightly larger than the average Mistclan cat, but not by much. His fur is medium length and well groomed. He stands and walks with perfect posture, yet it looks somewhat forced.

description
Hailkit and Frostkit are born in the first leaf-bare snowstorm. In the underground nursery they are safe and warm. Their mother Harrierheart names them after their unlucky timing.
Mothers Palestorm and Harrierheart kept a close eye on their kits in the early days. With freezing temperatures, the kits were at risk. So they stayed curled up at their family’s sides, at least one cat stayed in the nursery to keep them warm around the clock.
Prey is slow and so is the kits growth. Their playtime is limited and confined to deepest, warmest parts of the nursery. But kits cannot be contained forever. The duo begged to see the rest of the camp. Eventually they're allowed to glance out from the entrance of the nursery. Everything is blanketed in white.
It's the most beautiful thing Hailkit has ever seen, icicles hanging from the branches of trees that seem to stretch to Starclan. Thin ice and snow cover the camp, and soft snowflakes dance to the ground. Hailkit spent his early moons simply watching. Cats traced patterns in the snow as the trudged along camp. Apprentices tossed snow on each other, and the elders complaints echoed across the camp.
As the ice thawed and the kits grew they finally got to play outside. Hailkit preferred to find perches to watch the camp from rather than run around with his sister. Sometimes he’d wait for her to run by and hop on top of her, much to her chagrin.
Another younger kit often joined their ventures outside. Riverkit and Frostkit became fast friends, and eventually Hailkit softened against her persistence.
New-leaf came and went, and in the heat of green-leaf Hailpaw and Frostpaw were made apprentices. Hailpaw was assigned Acornleap, a lighthearted tom who viewed patrols as an excuse to find or spread gossip. Perhaps Birchstar hoped the chatty tom would bring his apprentice out of his shell, and that the responsibility would ground Acornleap.
The two do not get along.
Hailpaw could not take his mentor seriously. He frequently tagged along with Frostpaw and her more serious mentor. Acornleap didn’t mind, having the quiet apprentice around put a damper on most conversations.
It became clear that Hailpaw had a knack for his warrior training. He was far more patient and aware of his surroundings than most apprentices. It wasn’t long before he'd found his ideal way of fighting and hunting: dropping from trees. He had the patience to stay still and wait for something to cross his path. And the awareness to find the most common prey paths to frequent.
It was a unique style, not always useful, but when given the chance he proved its merits.
Hailpaw also shows aptitude with stealthily moving along the branches. Deft paws and careful eyes attracted the attention of some weavers, but Hailpaw quickly made it known he'd rather be a traditional warrior.
In leaf-bare Hailpaw received his name, Hailfall.
But Frostpaw did not receive hers. She'd been held back after being caught crossing into Prairieclan land.
After the ceremony Frostpaw confronted her brother, insisted he should have delayed his naming to stay with her. Siblings should be named together. He remarked that he hadn't crossed the border and gotten in trouble. It devolved into petty squabbling before Palestorm and Harrierheart broke up the argument.
Like all new warriors Hailfall kept guard that night, certain the camp was safe under his watchful gaze. Then morning arrived. Frostpaw had disappeared from her nest. She was gone.
Hailfall threw himself into warrior life. He volunteered for every patrol he can find, or went out by himself. He couldn’t shake the nagging feeling that the fight, his naming, they drove Snowpaw away.
For several moons life floated by. Frostpaw was spoken of less and less, and the clan silently accepted that she's gone for good. His family and Riversong were still there for him. But it didn't do much to ease the pain of Frostpaw's disappearance.
In mid new-leaf Hailfall was given his first apprentice. He wanted to believe it’s because he's shown his skill as a warrior, though he wonders if Russetstar only assigned him Alderpaw to keep him from feeling lonely.
Alderpaw was a rowdy little tom. He spent half his time talking and the other half running headfirst into trouble. The elders had basically banished him from their den after a few too many incidents involving thorns and nests.
Hailfall did his best to rein in the apprentice's energy, direct it towards training and away from mischief. It took time, but Hailfall was determined to be a better mentor than the one he got.
Alderpaw slowly learned when to calm down, how to behave. And when to let his energy out. The tom is clearly a skilled hunter and finds his balance in the branches in no time.
By the time green-leaf came around the tom had managed to go half a moon without getting into any trouble. Some weavers took note of his skill climbing the trees, but the apprentice turned them down immediately. Hailfall chuckled and reminisced about doing the same. It's a nice bonding moment between the two, a realization that they had something in common.
Leaf-fall arrived and one day Hailfall noticed someone near the border. A white she-cat. Eager to defend his home, he leapt down to confront her.
But it became clear that the cat was no threat. She was a lost kittypet.
Luna.
She quickly introduced herself and asked if he knows the way home. It took some time for her to realize just how close she came to crossing onto clan land and all that would entail. Hailfall pointed her in the right direction, but just before she left, she mentioned something. That a friend of hers had said something about clans before.
It didn’t take long for him to realize her friend is Frostpaw. She was alive and in the twoleg place.
Hailfall and Luna left for the twoleg place that night. He let his mothers know that he was going to find Frostpaw, and they let him slip away.
The journey to the two-leg place is simple. But it took a few days since Luna was still tired from her first trip, and it's clear that when he caught her a measly mouse meal that she hadn’t eaten in days.
During the journey Hailfall found that he's grown quite close to Luna. She's chatty, sure, but kind and just as eager to listen as to talk. They took turns talking about life, how it's different in the clan and as a kittypet.
When they arrive Luna reunited the siblings before returning to her twolegs. Hailfall could hardly believe his eyes upon seeing his sister, sitting on a fence in the twoleg place, safe and sound.
Frostpaw, now called Snowy, was surprised to see her brother, and asked if he'd abandoned the clan after the first pretty she-cat walked by. Hailfall reminded her that she had abandoned the clan, not him, and that he was here to bring her back.
Snowy revealed what happened the night she left. She'd crossed the border in her anger, and by the time she realized she'd gone too far she was lost. Then some twolegs had found her in the woods and brought her here. She hadn't known the way back.
Hailfall begged her to return. He knew the way back now, they could be a family again. She could finally get her name.
Snowy agreed to return. Kittypet life had been nice, easy, but boring.
The next day the siblings left, but not before thanking Luna for reuniting them. The journey back was much faster, and before long they set foot on Mistclan land.
Snowy's arrival caused quite the stir. Harrierheart, Palestorm, and Riversong were thrilled; Alderpaw was angry his mentor had left him behind. But once the dust settled the clan rejoiced that the lost apprentice had returned home.
While Russetstar wasn't pleased that Hailfall had left the clan without warning, the young warrior received no punishment. Just a stern talking to.
Snowy was named Frostfeather after finally completing her warrior assessment.
Alderbranch is given his name a moon after Frostfeather returns. Hailfall is thrilled to see the once troublesome tom turn out a respectable warrior with an honorable name.
Hailfall's rescue resulted in a shift in his reputation in the clan. While Frostfeather dealt with some rumors and gossip about her life as a kittypet, many cats were quick to praise Hailfall for bring her back. He was the devoted brother who'd saved his sister in their eyes. A truly loyal cat. Not the brother whose arguments had driven her away, or the warrior who failed to notice an apprentice escape into the night.
After returning to the clan Frostfeather and Hailfall began to bond once more. He apologized for the fight, for not delaying his ceremony. She admitted running away had been dangerous and she’d been rash. They went on patrols together, enjoying each other's company after moons and moons apart.
Leaf-bare arrives, and Hailfall is glad to spend it curled up with his family and friends, silently watching the beautiful and dangerous world around them.
He was given more duties in the colder moons, relied on more by the clan leadership. He went from leading the occasional patrol to leading one every few days. As ever he threw himself into the work, uncertain if it was a punishment for leaving unannounced or a chance to prove himself.
New-leaf arrived. Everything seemed to be back in its place. Until Hailfall noticed a familiar scent near the border. Luna. He found her waiting just outside the border, eager for news on how Snow had been settling in.
He sat and told her of the clan, of Frostfeather's new warrior name, and how well she'd done during the cold moons. Some had wondered if she would leave once more when the prey ran low, but she'd proved them wrong.
Luna explained that she'd wanted to visit earlier, but the cold weather made the journey too difficult for her to take alone.
For the next moon Luna visited the border frequently. She insisted that she needed rest before returning, and Hailfall accepted it since it meant he got to see more of her. He taught her how to hunt, how to climb trees, eventually convinced Frostfeather to stop by and say hi.
After they got back Frostfeather confronted her brother.
It was clear to her that Luna was more than a friend to Hailfall. And she argued that it was not good for either of them. Luna could never be a proper mate to him, and Hailfall could never be a proper mate to her. Their lives were too different, and neither would be willing to leave home for the other.
It hurt, but Hailfall agreed. The next time Luna showed up he told her not to return. That it's better for everyone if this stop. He couldn’t be with her, even if he wanted to. She was angry, but in the end left, never to visit again.
He didn’t have time to mourn the fling. The increase in duties didn’t slow down now that the warmer moons had arrived. They increased. And despite asking for another chance to be mentor, he was passed over. Something is going on, he just can't tell what.
The answer came soon enough. Russetstar and Birchclaw pulled him aside one spring day. The clan was at peace, prey was plentiful, and they wanted to retire. Hailfall proved himself in recent moons, as a clanmate and a mentor. Now they hoped he'd prove himself as a leader.
It was strange when the leaders stepped down. There's a mix of joy in his new position and fear that he'd fail the clan.
It was surreal when he heads to the moonpool to receive his nine lives. Cats he's barely known or heard of greet him and grant him the ultimate responsibility and gift.
It was terrifying when he returned to the clan as Hailstar.
But he did his best to get settled into his new role. Russetstar and Birchclaw are there to lend a guiding paw, but it’s an adjustment for the whole clan.
While Ridgeclan has always been... religious, rumors spread of the growing fervor in the clan. Hailstar did his best to navigate the waters, to quell fears without lowering their guard.
As leaf-fall came around Hailstar decided to take on another apprentice. Nightpaw was a quiet, but a promising young she-cat. He hoped the decision will show his clan strength and a dedication to the younger generation.
After a few more moons with no sign of Ridgeclan's fervor breaking, Hailstar increased patrols at their border. The anger from the other clan only strengthened his resolve. Why be angry about patrols on a border you don't plan to cross?
In the heart of leaf-bare his clan was attacked. He sent Riversong as a messenger to Praireclan and prayed to Starclan that they answer. The battle is brutal, Hailstar had never seen violence like this before. The injuries are numerous, and he hid his own while the rest of the clan got treatment. His first life was lost that night as he nodded off, unaware of how much blood he'd lost.
His family made it out mostly unscathed, but the clan suffered loss. Nightpaw had to spend two moons recovering from her injuries. Once she healed he named her Nightstep and hoped that the worst of this was behind them. They were closer with Praireclan than ever, Ridgeclan had failed and Wolfstar died.
Then the gathering occurred. Accusations flew and Hailstar was seething that the clan who just attacked his own now claimed to scent the other clans on their land. The moon was covered, and the gathering broke up. He silently thanked the ancestors for stopping it before more blood was shed.
It seemed clear to Hailstar that the perception of an alliance between his clan and Praireclan had caused Ridgeclan to react. He tried to pull back, to return the clans to the status quo. But it ended up awkward and he wondered if it was the wrong move. He doesn't want to give Ridgeclan a new reason to fight, but now he worried if without Praireclan’s support a new battle would tear his clan to shreds.
Then Irisfrost's kits went missing. The camp exploded in theories and fear and sorrow. There's no trace of the kits.
He tried to balance looking for the kits and watching the border and not upsetting the other clans. But it's hard. With each moon that passed since the disappearance making it less likely they’d be found and the threat of the other two clans, Hailstar struggled to handle it all.
The brief fight between PrairieClan and MistClan only a moon after the gathering worried the young leader. He'd been plagued with worry that Ridgeclan would attack again and now there's a definitive sign of weakness in the relationship between the cats who swayed the battle last time. Would Ridgeclan attack again after hearing of this?
Mothers Palestorm and Harrierheart kept a close eye on their kits in the early days. With freezing temperatures, the kits were at risk. So they stayed curled up at their family’s sides, at least one cat stayed in the nursery to keep them warm around the clock.

personality
Hailstar is known to his clan as a dependable if quiet leader. He's made his dedication to the clan known through moons of service. But he tends to lead from a distance, focusing on the larger picture and ruminating over what will happen more than acting in the moment. He's willing to make tough choices and stand by them when pushed, but he's almost always looking to return the clan to a state of status quo.
The recent troubles have him stressed, but he projects a strong and stoic persona to his clan.
Outside of being a leader, he takes great pride in being a good mentor. Both of his apprentices have turned out as respectable warriors, and the training of the next generation is one of his top priorities.
