The dry grass swayed and tickled Sparkpaw’s whiskers as she padded up a shallow hill, eyes on the sky that matched her eyes. It was an unseasonably warm late morning, closer to green-leaf than leaf-bare, and she tried to focus on that than almost literally anything else. Her brother had taken a little more than just a tuft of fur this morning, yowling at her about stealing rabbit fur from his stupid nest when he swiped his claws at her fleeing flank. She did, but he’d stolen it from her nest first. She didn’t bleed, but her haunch still smarted from the score mark the warrior had left. She’d done well grooming to hide the spot — at least she hoped. Of course, her mom hadn’t done a freaking thing. Just don’t antagonize your brother, Spark. Yes, he is your brother, and it’s about time you got used to it. No, you can’t get him back. He was older. Bigger. Meaner. The PrarieClan native could do or say whatever the hell he wanted. ”Dappledfern, where are we going?” Sparkpaw stopped at the top of the hill. ”Hunting? Fighting?”

#s://i~pinimg~com/564x/e4/a0/93/e4a093b62b6e11b8bde092a926bc478f~jpg dappledfern, Warm days were rare in this season, with the time between each nice day growing and growing until it would loop around as the weather turned warm. Prey would be enjoying it as well, soaking in the warmth before the inevitable chill of winter. " Let's hunt." No point in wasting such a lucky day. Fighting could be saved for a colder day, when the heat of a fight and another cat would be appreciated. " You can take lead today. It will be good practice for your warrior assessment." Sparkpaw was at the age where most cats began to earn theirs. Ideally the young she-cat would earn hers before leaf-bare's end. That way Dappledfern could focus on on her mate and maybe have a litter in new-leaf. " I will be here if you need any assistance."

“Let’s hunt,” came her mentor’s simple answer. Made sense. Warm day, leafbare approaching. Everyone needed to fatten up. "You can take the lead today. It will be good practice for your warrior assessment. I will be here if you need any assistance." ”My assessment?” Sparkpaw brightened, head lifting with a flick of her tail. ”Okay, cool!”She wanted to be a warrior so bad it hurt sometimes. Then maybe she could get some respect from someone. Or maybe, just maybe, she’d have the power to forge her own path, no longer stuck with whatever hand her family dealt her. She didn’t waste time, and she sprang off into the swaying grass. Every step was placed carefully as she scented the air, parting her jaws to drink in all that she could. It wasn’t long before she scented none other than delectable rabbit. Her mouth watered, and she dropped to a crouch, prowling to seek it out. The scent was powerful. She pushed through the tall grass and to a drop in the hills, the grass shorter and choppier over uneven earth. Her eyes widened, a smile lighting her face. It wasn’t a rabbit, it was rabbit s. They were hopping among a few holes in the ground, at least five of them. She shifted her weight on her haunches, to and fro, bunching her muscles. Blue eyes locked on one, the biggest, the slowest. One breath. Two. Three. Sparkpaw launched like a bolt of lightning. She leaped down the hill, then hit the ground racing after the rabbit before it even started running. She blocked its way into a hole, forcing it up the hill. A savage grin of bared teeth showed as she pushed herself just a little harder, made a leap, and sank her claws into the hide of the rabbit. She cut off its scream before it began, teeth grabbing its throat ending the kill almost immediately. Pride swelled in the she-cat, and she picked up the rabbit to drag it to her mentor. With it dropped at her paws, she shivered her tail with the euphoria of the kill. ”There’s a little den down there. We should come back to this spot tomorrow, when they’ve settled down.”

#s://i~pinimg~com/564x/e4/a0/93/e4a093b62b6e11b8bde092a926bc478f~jpg dappledfern, Ah, Sparkpaw was excited about her assessment. Good, that drive would serve her well. Dappledfern would have to consult Cindersong on the timing of it all, see if her sister agreed that it would occur in the next few moons. Some apprentices took longer than others. And this was her first time being a mentor. What would Sparkpaw be named? She contemplated the matter as she followed her apprentice, making sure not to disturb the surrounding foliage. The apprentice did well, following the clear scent of rabbit. A lovely and large meal in these lean moons. And then she was off. Dappledfern resisted the urge to join the chase. This was about Sparkpaw and assessing her in preparation of her assessment. And the clan was fine on prey for now. " Well spotted." She glanced down at the rabbit. It was large. " It'll let you pick where to cache the rabbit and let you continue to lead on another hunt. So far you are doing well." " Tell me, what do you think are your strongest and weakest skills as a future warrior?" Self assessment was important as well. And it would help Dappledfern pick what to focus on these last few moons of training.

“Well spotted,” Dappledfern said. Spark’s tail swished at the praise, a small smile making its way to her face. “I’ll let you pick where to cache the rabbit and let you continue to lead on another hunt. So far you are doing well." Max nodded and took the rabbit in her teeth. Her mouth watered — it smelled and tasted so freaking good — but she did what she was asked to do, finding a dip in the ground where she could claw clumps of the soil and grass over the top of it before returning to her mentor. "Tell me, what do you think are your strongest and weakest skills as a future warrior?" The apprentice frowned, sitting on her haunches. “I’m a good hunter.” Strength first. “I’m small and agile.”But what about her weakest? She thought for a moment, shifting her paws. She wasn’t terrible in battle training, or tracking or climbing. Especially not climbing, but she didn't want to mention a MistClan skill. “I guess I’m not very good at moving around in the tunnels.” She shrugged. “I get turned around and I can’t smell anything, and they kinda freak me out.”

#s://i~pinimg~com/564x/e4/a0/93/e4a093b62b6e11b8bde092a926bc478f~jpg dappledfern, “ I’m a good hunter.” Dappledfern's expression stayed calm, despite being pleased with how Sparkpaw was handling the assignment. It was important to identify one's strengths, to best help the clan. But the next part of her task would certainly be the hardest. Some cats would struggle to find a flaw within themselves, others might find it readily but struggle to admit it out loud. " The tunnels can be dangerous, especially to those who are inexperienced in them." She hadn't expected tunneling to be her apprentice's response. Unless Sparkpaw secretly wanted to be a tunneler, it wasn't a major weakness. " Many cats avoid them for that." Her own sister was one who stood against the tunnel system. " Keep your strengths and weaknesses in mind. Reflect on them as you continue your time as an apprentice and eventually as a warrior." Training and improvement did not stop after receiving a warrior's name. There was simply... more responsibility. All the more reason to learn and grow. " Your answers may change with time and experience."

"The tunnels can be dangerous,” her mentor agreed. “Especially to those who are inexperienced in them. Many cats avoid them for that." Sparkpaw nodded. ”I sure as heck will.”"Keep your strengths and weaknesses in mind,” Dappledfern went on. “Reflect on them as you continue your time as an apprentice and eventually as a warrior." Eventually. Her tail drooped. She was tired of being an apprentice. With a warrior name, her stupid brother might respect her more. She’d feel stronger and older and she could tell him where to shove it. ”When will I get my warrior name, Dappledfern?” she said. ”I’m twelve moons old. This is getting old.” Then she cleared her throat, ears getting hot. ”Not you though. You aren’t getting old. I just want to be one of you.”

#s://i~pinimg~com/564x/e4/a0/93/e4a093b62b6e11b8bde092a926bc478f~jpg dappledfern, Dappledfern hadn't expected Sparkpaw's reaction. It stung to see her attitude shift as the conversation changed. She couldn't blame her apprentice for wanting her warrior name, it was an important moment in any clan cat's life. " Most likely soon." While she planned for the she-cat to become a warrior before new-leaf, she hesitated to say that out loud. What if something went wrong and her naming was delayed? Wouldn't it be worse if she knew when she should've received her name? " You are at the age where it is on the horizon." Not you though. You aren’t getting old. Dappledfern almost chuckled at the comment. But it wasn't entirely wrong, she was getting older. It was part of the reason she'd finally decided this upcoming warm season would be the one to have kits. Before the chance to be a warrior at the same time as her children slipped away. " It's alright, aging is inevitable. You will be a warrior in time. The moons start to fly by as you get older, you'll have your name and maybe even your own apprentice before you know it."

“Most likely soon,” her mentor answered, and Sparkpaw’s ears perked a little. “You are at the age where it is on the horizon.” She tried to push down the nagging doubt that she just hadn’t been good enough to receive her warrior name. There were others that hadn’t too. Brightpaw was one. Darkpaw too. Dustpaw. It wasn’t just her, she reminded herself. Maybe PrarieClan just spent more time training their apprentices—that couldn’t be a bad thing. "It's alright, aging is inevitable. You will be a warrior in time. The moons start to fly by as you get older, you'll have your name and maybe even your own apprentice before you know it." ”I wonder what my name will be,” she murmured, half to herself. ”Can’t be lame. Better be something cool.”She cast a look at Dappledfern. ”Were you happy with your warrior name?”

#s://i~pinimg~com/564x/e4/a0/93/e4a093b62b6e11b8bde092a926bc478f~jpg dappledfern, Dappledfern listened as Sparkpaw contemplated her future name. It was certainly an important prospect to ponder. At best it could show a cat's strengths, at worse it could be an annoyance for the rest of ones days. A warrior's name was rarely ever changed. " Hmm..." Had she been happy with her name? It was a nice one, without question. Peaceful. In her mind it evoked a feeling of safety, comfort, of lying safe from the sun's rays under the shade of a fern, dappled with sunlight enough to bring warmth without discomfort. A good name for a warrior, or a queen. " It's a fine name. I suppose at the time it meant more to me that I received it and less about the name itself. But I've no issue with it, never have." She glanced at her apprentice. Would Sparkpaw be named for her personality? Her skills? Her coat? " I am sure your name will be fine as well. Littlestar has done this many times."

Sparkpaw watched her mentor contemplate, and did so herself. Dappledfern had always been good to her. A patient mentor, a she-cat that didn’t judge her origins or attitude. Their time training together would come to end, sooner or later, and a sudden loneliness gripped her tight. She didn’t have any friends, not here. Dappledfern was as close as she had. "It's a fine name,” the she-cat said, drawing her from her thoughts. “I suppose at the time it meant more to me that I received it and less about the name itself. But I've no issue with it, never have." She met Dappledfern’s eye, and she stood a little straighter, hoping to be whatever it is her mentor was looking for. "I am sure your name will be fine as well. Littlestar has done this many times." She frowned a little. ”Littlestar has seemed… off…” Her ears swiveled back a little. ”Like she’s got a couple bees buzzing around her head.”

#s://i~pinimg~com/564x/e4/a0/93/e4a093b62b6e11b8bde092a926bc478f~jpg dappledfern, Ah. Sparkpaw's comment, while apt, concerned her. If even apprentices were aware, how bad had it gotten? Dappledfern's tail tip twitched, though the rest of her body language stayed calm. " Littlestar will pull through. It's been a difficult few seasons for everyone, there's a lot on her mind." That was the hope anyway. Her mind turned towards the though of bearing a litter this newleaf. Would Littlestar be back to normal then? Would the clans be calm enough to raise her potential children in? Was it ever calm enough? There was nothing either of them could do for Littlestar. All she could do was continue her duties, support her sister as deputy, and prepare her apprentice. " Don't worry about your naming, it'll happen soon enough. Leaf-bare is hard on all, time will bring her clarity and you a new name."
