With the sun still many pawsteps from sinking beyond the mountainous horizon, Sanguine thought he had ample time to return to the Nightwalker camp. His only limit was the encroaching night, nothing more than a distant dark blue in the sky. Yet, as he delved further into the mountainous pass, toeing the line between Kingdom and clan, that darkness grew deeper.
And deeper. And deeper.
Not nighttime - rather, the darkness was made up of thick, smooth clouds, a range of grays and whites, heavy with whatever wintry nonsense they threatened the mountains with. Sanguine scowled at their approach, then reluctantly turned back toward camp, only for his attention to be caught by a familiar smell - rabbit. It was a harried thing, looking worse for wear in the cold season, belayed as it tried to move from rock to brush in the mountain pass. The weather must've disturbed it, Sanguine thought, before launching from his place between two craggy rocks. The rabbit fled. He gave chase.
Winter had been kinder to him. He was stronger, and his stamina far greater. He caught the rabbit, savored the blood between his teeth as he carried it back toward the mountain pass, until he realized the light flurries he felt moments ago were flurries no more. It was snowing. Properly. He wouldn't make it back to camp before this storm grew worse.
He did the only thing reasonable: slipping into a small cave he found earlier, right on the border between Kingdom and RidgeClan territory. It was a cozy nook. Room for two, maybe three cats. Four if they were close. Tonight, it would just be his - and the rabbit he caught.
And... whoever was lingering in the entryway? Sanguine caught a whiff of RidgeClan only after he saw the silhouette of a cat in the cave's mouth. "Good evening," he purred, choosing to believe this was just some poor clan cat who got caught in the snow like he did. "I am to be sharing this rabbit, if you're interested."
