#s://i~imgur~com/bzu3iZG~png [tw: foul language] It was slightly warmer than usual, which meant that Greenleaf was likely around the corner. He had completed his punishment chores for the day from the fight with Coyotepaw, but had slunk away from camp before he could get assigned to any other patrols or duties. Wheatpaw had clearly done enough for the day, as he gathered moss for the nursery and silently fluffed up the all the nests in the elder's den with Coyotepaw sitting right across from him. It took everything in his fiber to not tear that little shit into pieces.
A quick walk through the plain would ease his mind, surely, as he exited on of the tunnels that came out at the MistClan border. Perhaps he could also try this luck with hunting and bring it back for the little crybabies in the nursery, gain some reputation that way. Especially since he had noticed his mom watching him more when he was around camp...
The slender and tall tom galloped along the MistClan border in search of something, anything to do to keep his mind occupied. With all the recent spats with the other apprentices of the clan, he found himself more alone that usual. Sure, he had his little groupie of apprentices, but they were just suck ups to his higher position in the apprentice den. He really didn't believe they actually gave a shit about him. As soon as they would transition to the warrior's den, he would be old news. Wheatpaw would be old news when he transitioned to the warrior's den. Maybe he needed to try to delay his assessment and naming in order to stay at the top of the apprentice's den as long as possible.
Perhaps, though, he could try to find a loner or two to scare away today, so that he had plenty of exaggerated stories to tell later that day. Maybe Foxpaw could get roped into another one, and he can have another argument with them.
Wheatpaw stopped, however, when he saw another cat at the border in the distance. They were clearly on the side of MistClan, as the scent of unfamiliarity washed over him. "Hey! You up there!" The tom called, before starting to head that direction toward the other cat. They were clearly an apprentice and seemed to be the same age as him. "What's a MistClan apprentice doing all the way out here alone, eh?" he questioned, as he got close enough to get a clear look at the other cat staring back at him.

Salamanderpaw could not find any of his friends. It was only around midday, so he was sure they must still be out with their mentors, but his own mentor had given him some free time and he wanted to spend it with his friends. It was nice out, too, for leaf-bare, indicating newleaf was on its way, and he wanted even more to be able to spend it with his friends. Elkpaw was probably hunting with Hailstar, though, and Lotusfire had likely sent Spottedpaw somewhere to collect herbs. Salamanderpaw would have to find something else to do with his free time, which couldn’t be too difficult, right? He scanned the clearing, but all he could think to do was help other apprentices clean out the dens. The last thing he wanted to do today was some extra work. He could… eat alone? That sounded so boring and he wasn’t hungry enough to endure eating by himself. There was one more thing that Salamanderpaw thought of, something he’d been meaning to do, but hadn’t had the chance to until now. If he was fast enough, he could be back before his mentor started searching for him. With a quick glance around the clearing to make sure nobody would see him sneak away, he made his way out of camp. Quietly, Salamanderpaw moved farther away from camp and only once he was about a tree-length away from the entrance did he pick up the pace. In no time, he found himself at the PrairieClan border, pacing up and down it in an attempt to get a glimpse of the barn. It was around here, wasn’t it? “ Hey! You up there!” Salamanderpaw’s gaze fell on a lanky, brown-furred apprentice who was heading in his direction. Oh, great. “ What’s a MistClan apprentice doing all the way out here alone, eh?” Maybe this apprentice could help him. “ I’m Salamanderpaw. And couldn’t I ask you the same thing?” he purred light-heartedly. “ I’m trying to locate the barn, but I didn’t want to trespass on PrairieClan territory to do it. Isn’t it just behind those hills?”

Well, this probably wasn't going to go great. It seemed like this apprentice was just like all the others in the PrairieClan apprentice's den. Soft, gentle, the type to be bullied by a cat named Wheatpaw. And he was going to, especially with the first statements that the other tom said.
"Salamanderpaw? What kinda name is that? Who would name their kit after a lizard?" The pale tom had to catch himself from choking with a chuckle that emitted from his maw. Sure, Wheatpaw was weird, he would admit. But not AS weird as Salamanderpaw. "And... well, PrairieClan, we are pretty laidback. Apprentices are allowed to come and go from camp as they please. We don't even really have to tell our mentors." He sat with a proud expression on his face. It was good to be from PrairieClan and to play into what the other clans thought of the plains cats. It was easy to write off to them that they are simple and do as they please.
The apprentice continued, as Wheatpaw was halfway paying attention until he said he was looking for the barn. The barn? What would a MistClan cat be doing going to the barn. "Are you some lowlife trying to leave the clans or something?" Obviously, if that was the tom's intent, he would have probably said so. But, Wheatpaw wouldn't give up a chance for insults. But, Salamanderpaw seemed to be genuinely looking for the barn cats. It made him want to scratch his head in confusion. "Uh, yeah, but a little further. After you go over the hills, you'll see it in the far distance. It's a long walk, especially for a MistClanner who sticks to the trees."
The pale tom looked in the direction he was describing, with a scoff coming from his mouth. "But you'll have to go the long way around. Ain't no way I'll let you take the easy way. And to make sure of it, I'll walk along the border with you to make sure you don't try anything." Salamanderpaw, from the looks of it, didn't seem to be one to cause mischief. But Wheatpaw was always looking for a way to get his pelt dirty. "Come on now," he started, without letting the apprentice have any word on Wheatpaw's actions before setting off.
"So, what exactly are you going to do at the barn? I know MistClan ain't worried about alliances with them."

The first thing the PrairieClan apprentice did was insult Salamanderpaw. He was so surprised by the other tom’s blatant rudeness that he didn’t even feel offended until he’d recovered from his shock. His name was weird? Did everyone think his name was weird? Before he could snap back with a barb of his own, the PrairieClan cat was going on about how laidback his clan was. Salamanderpaw remembered how he and Elkpaw had managed to sneak out of camp to visit the Mooncave. They’d avoided getting caught somehow, but he was sure they would’ve been in big trouble if someone had seen them. They’d intended on visiting the Moonpool, but hadn’t made it that far. Not everyone was meant to see the Moonpool, though, not even two apprentices who were destined for greatness. “ Are you some lowlife trying to leave the clans or something?” Again, the PrairieClan apprentice insulted Salamanderpaw. He wasn’t a traitor. He’d never abandon his clan. In fact, he was trying to save it. “ Of course not,” he said, slightly annoyed. He’d tried being polite, hoping that benevolence would get him farther than unkindness, but that didn’t appear to be working. This apprentice didn’t seem to understand how to be civil. And then he actually said something that wasn’t mean, but helpful, pointing out which direction the barn was in. Just as Salamanderpaw opened his mouth to thank him for his assistance, the other apprentice decided he’d escort him all the way to the barn. All he could think was how unpleasant this walk was going to be. Surely the PrairieClan cat was going to be ill-mannered the entire trip. “ Oh, you don’t-” have to do that. Salamanderpaw started, but the apprentice cut him off. “ Come on now,” the lanky tom said, already moving. Alright. Looks like this is happening. With a defeated sigh, Salamanderpaw hurried after the other feline until they were walking side by side. “ So what exactly are you going to do at the barn?” He wasn’t sure about sharing his mission with the PrairieClan apprentice when he didn’t even know his name, but he feared the other tom would tattle on him if he didn’t. It would be so easy for the tall cat to tell his mentor he’d encountered a MistClan apprentice named Salamanderpaw at the border who was searching for the barn. It wouldn’t be long before that news reached a MistClan cat’s ears. Hopefully the other apprentice would understand Salamanderpaw was only trying to save his clan and that PrairieClan wouldn’t be involved at all. “ As I’m sure you know, outsiders have been scented within MistClan’s borders,” Salamanderpaw began. “ I intend on putting an end to that problem.” He puffed out his chest proudly, as if he’d already solved that issue for his clan. “ I’m visiting the barn cats to see what they know. They seem peaceful enough, so I doubt it’s them who are trespassing, but maybe they know who is.” He eyed the PrairieClan apprentice warily. “ Hey, uh… Whatever your name is, you won’t tell anyone what it is I’m doing here, right? I’m trying to do something to help my clanmates feel more secure in their own territory. Surely you can understand that, right? I promise what I’m trying to do won’t hurt PrairieClan in any way. You have my word.”
