It had been easy to coast off of the surplus of herbs in the warmer moons, the medicine stores never stayed low. But time was running out. Many vital plants would wither and moons would pass before they'd grow again, much less be harvestable. It had been easy with Sootwhisker in charge. He'd lead the clan through the prior leaf-fall, kept her organized and prepared for the changing seasons. The moons without him had been hard. And now everything fell on her shoulders. Well, her shoulders and Frostpaw's. Rinstorm glanced backat the young she-cat. It was nice to have another set of paws around, but balancing duties and training was a struggle. It seemed like not long ago she'd been a 'paw, hurriedly following Sootwhisker's lead. And now she was in charge, struggling against the current of time and trying to keep her own head above water while training another. " Focus on any plants you recognize that look like they're wilting. We need to get the stores nice and full before leaf-bare." Thankfully most of the herbs they used grew throughout the forest, with only a few growing elsewhere. There would have to be specific gathering missions for some of those. " And be careful if you see any berries, always ask me if they're safe before harvesting." The last thing the clan needed was a poisoned apprentice. |

Leaf-fall was upon them, leaves changing their colors and with that threatens with colder weather and lesser herbs which would perhaps cause a future struggle for the clan if they did not prep anytime soon. Bi-colored eyes watched Rainstorm calmly as her fluffy tail flicked side to side while her curled ears swerved forward as she listened to the medicine cat's instructions "Okay" she stated simply as her gaze drifted towards the horizon to begin searching for anything in familiarities to her. Frostpaw knew it was okay to get things wrong but she wanted to make an attempt to impress her mentor but...for now she will listen to what the other said, knowing that she was probably stressing over the threat of leaf-bare looming over them. Pausing she would look back over at the other and tilted her head slightly at the "Is there anything we need specifically? Like...uhm...Marigold? Or..." she trailed off as a list of herbs dance in her head trying to figure out what their names were once more while a frown furrowed onto her lips. |

Rainstorm tried to imagine the medicine cat den, filled with so many leaves and medicines. Orgainization was not her strong suit, and she struggled to remember where she'd even placed it. Had Frostpaw noticed a shortage that she hadn't? Or were they just buried underneath a pile of other plants. " If you see it, grab it. We can count later. Just leave enough that it'll regrow." " We'll make specific runs later. I suppose if you want to keep an eye out for something specific, we'll probably need chokecherry bark incase someone gets a cough. Maybe borage too, never know." Rainstorm rattled off a few herbs that she wasn't certain if they had enough of. At the very least they were herbs they could never have to little of. "Oh, I probably should be quizzing you. Saves time. Uhhh... do you remember what borage does?" Rainstorm called over her shoulder while approaching a small batch of yarrow. Too small, not enough to collect without risking the whole stock. |

The young she-cats ear twitched as she listened to Rainstorm's word with a slight nod. Making sure if she spotted the golden flowers to nip some up, so she silently noted to herself to keep that in mind. Bi-color eyes looked up at the Medicine cat while she listened to the she-cat talk about what they need in specifics, mentioning chokecherry bark which was good for cough and the apprentice quickly noted that down before pausing and looking up at the other when she started to quiz her on what certain herbs do. Borage, Frostpaw narrowed her eyes slightly in an attempt to remember what it did, something to deal with infection if she remembered right. Chewed up and placed on wounds. Pondering a bit the girl then would respond, "For borage...infection, you chew it into a pulp and put it on wounds" uncertainty rang in the young cat's voice but she was sure it was that. |

When she mentioned it earlier she was fairly certain they were low, but the more she thought on it the less certain she felt about that count. It wasn't that commonly used. " No, borage leaves are used to help queens produce milk. Very important when we only have a few litters, means there's fewer others who can take over nursing." It was a tricky one since many queens didn't struggle with milk production. Had she not covered it enough with Frostpaw? Her attention was so divided at any given moment. Had she been neglecting her duties as a mentor? " I suppose that was a bit of a trick question. I'm sure you'll get the next one." What should she even quiz Frostpaw on next? Rainstorm couldn't give it much thought, there was too much else to do and collect and she had to keep her mind somewhat focused on the plants around them. As she frantically glanced about, a distant glitter of dew on cobweb caught her eye. Normally she'd stop and grab it, but cobwebs had a long shelf-life and wouldn't wither like plants. However the tree it hung from was was worth her attention. Alder. " What about alder? What do we use from this tree and what for?" Rainstorm asked as she walked up to the tree, looking for some low lying branches to climb and harvest leaves from. " I'll give you a hint, your last guess is on the right track for this one. It's not for infection, but something similar." |

They would pause a bit when she realized that she had gotten the answer wrong and then her eyes flicked away as she quickly jotted down to remember the use for later when or if it comes in necessity, especially if some queens decide to give way to having kits during the colder seasons, tail flicking a bit, she must pay more close in attention to what Rainstorm was telling her since once day...she would not have the other to guide her. The next question, alder. Bi color eyes drifted towards the sturdy tree while her gaze narrowed a bit, Rainstorm giving a clue as to what it was used for and then a hum came from her throat as she took delicate time to weave through her memories in rememberance to what Rainstorm had told her before. This time, the apprentice was determined to get the answer correct, her ears perked forward as she squinted a bit. She knew they used the bark of the tree which, in leaf-bare would come in handy since bark is easily scoungable as far as the medicine cat apprentice was aware. "Alder bark, we use it to help ease toothaches" she said smoothly before pausing slightly, wondering if they should collect some now instead of waiting, and the she-cat figured once they get back to the den to help reorganize the disorderly den for Rainstorm's sake since the other had her paw filled already. "Should we get some now? As well as some borage too?" The apprentice placed in smoothly since by the looks of it, the thoughts were clearly rotating in her mentor's mind. |

Below her Frostpaw contemplated her answer as Rainstorm focused her attention on the leaves. They'd need to be large and as green as possible. Anything to extend their usefulness. " Well, yes that is a use of alder. I'll give you that one." Toothaches weren't super common, but warriors sure did despise them. She snapped off a smaller branch with a few still barely green leaves clinging to it. Rainstorm heavily plopped onto the forest floor. " I was searching for alder leaves are chewed into a poultice to reduce inflammation. We can wait on harvesting the bark, that'll be there even in the heart of leaf-bare. But if you see borage grab it." With the stick firmly in her jaws, Rainstorm continued deeper into the forest. " Do you remember if anything's low on storage?" |

Ears swerved forward as she listened to the response from Rainstorm, proud she had gotten it right...well, sort of. Rainstorm had meant the leaves and not the bark itself, and now another thing will e quickly pocketed into her mind to remember for the next time she was to be quizzed on something. Her tail swished slightly as she nodded, keeping in mind to grab borage if they come across any, her pawsteps light as she followed closely to Rainstorm before the next question was asked. A slight pause as she imagined the messy den inside of her mind trying to remember if there seemed to be something lower than it usually was and she frowned a bit. "Catnip, I believe. Even if it is not, it would be best to grab some before leaf-bare hits...uhm, maybe some marigold as well" she said smoothly, going over her mental list and what she has seen and has not seen of plenty in the den while following close to her mentor, scanning the clearing for anything else that was useful to the storage. |

As far as she could remember, there wasn't much. Probably. Maybe? It couldn't hurt to grab more. It was useful, and if there was too much catnip, which she doubted, they could always try and trade it with the other medicine cats. " Mmmhmm... keep an eye out." Marigold as well? There might be some along the river. But that was a good bit away from where they were now... she'd have to go again later or maybe as a warrior to grab some for her. Some cats might be trying to grab the last bits of fish before the water became too cold, surely they could grab some flowers as well. " If we have time we should try and get an herb count." But there never really was enough time. When she became medicine cat, it felt like she was drowning in her responsibilities. Now she felt as though she was treading water, making improvements. But it wasn't enough. There was always something to do. And never enough time. " Maybe when we get back and sort these." As she talked she walked forward, once again on the lookout. Catnip. Rainstorm glanced back at her apprentice. " How are you feeling? About leaf-bare?" The cold season challenged everyone. Had she done enough to prepare her apprentice for it? |
