description
Owlkit knows his parents don’t love each other. He also knows that the entire Clan is also aware of this fact. The majority of their interactions, generally initiated by Nightfang visiting the nursery, end in heated arguments.
“They used to love each other.” Eaglepaw tells him one afternoon as they bat a mossball back and forth on the other side of camp. Owlkit has set up a strategic scattering of rocks, enemies to avoid. Eaglepaw struggles to see the vision but plays along anyway. “...I think.”
Owlkit frowns a bit at this. For Eaglepaw to be so unsure, their parents and their feud must have started before even his brother was born.
He’s distracted momentarily as his toss of the mossball collides into one of the rocks, which results in a quick rearranging of the other enemy rocks in response to the attack. Eaglepaw watches, smiling in amusement until one of their parents' angry yowls reach his ears. Both brothers flinch.
“...I wish Nightfang would stop visiting.” Owlkit confesses softly, a secret between brothers. His paw nudges shamefully at one of the rock enemies.
Eaglepaw sighs. “...yeah. Me too.”
–
It only takes one moon until their secret wish is granted.
Eaglepaw ushers him from the nursery as soon as the argument starts, Deerheart fiercely defending her sons as Nightfang spat insults about Eaglepaw’s reclusive ways and Owlkit’s sensitivity-
“Hey, let’s build that secret tunnel you’ve been thinking about. I’ve seen your scribbles in the dirt…” While not generally the most talkative cat, Eaglepaw chatters on for a moment, successfully pulling Owlkit’s wide eyes from the direction of their parents.
They spend the rest of the afternoon carving out their tunnel. Really, it’s more of a den, a shallow cave scooped out of the side of a hill just outside camp supported with sticks and decorated with leaves and stones. But it’s theirs, their secret hideaway, and it couldn’t be more perfect.
When they return back to camp in the evening, paws sore and covered with dirt, they find their mother in the nursery with Nightfang nowhere to be found.
She tells them softly to expect less visits from Nightfang.
For a horrible moment, Owlkit is almost entirely overtaken with guilt. He had wished his parents to separate and they did, and only a terrible awful son would think such a thing, and…
He realizes that the gentle smile on his mother’s face as he hurries over to her is one of relief, and while he can’t quite comprehend the complexities of such a situation just yet, the smile at least soothes his anxieties.
True to her word, Nightfang’s visits stop.
–
Where one problem ends, another begins.
Owlkit finds himself the object of another kit’s teasing. While the presence of Eaglepaw tended to keep away harsher company, Eaglepaw couldn’t always be there. He had to train, and there were only so many training sessions he could skip out on to linger at the nursery.
It is an otherwise unmemorable afternoon when he finds himself trapped by the bully of the nursery. An almost-apprenticed aged youngster looking to impress their future denmates, the bully stumbles through insults, bouncing between various topics of size, fathers, and protective brothers.
Owlkit tries to keep his head down, mulling over the best way to escape the other’s taunts. Oh, if only Eaglepaw could be back-
A fuzzy missile suddenly dives between him and the other kit. Owlkit panics, thinking the bully has suddenly produced a monochrome assistant until he realizes that the newcomer, Darkkit, is defending him.
He can only marvel at the ferocity of the defense, sand and insults flying at the bully as they flee the intensity of the newcomer.
When Darkkit turns to regard him, Owlkit stares in amazement, unable to find the words to convey his appreciation.
He doesn’t have the chance to come up with the right thing to say. Darkkit is quickly ushered away by concerned and appalled parents, leaving Owlkit to process the interaction in silence.
–
Darkkit approaches him again once released from the seclusion that followed his ‘attack’. He doesn’t give Owlkit a chance to stumble through a belated thank you.
“Do you want to be friends?”
Owlkit finds himself speechless yet again. Friends? That was something Owlkit was lacking, despite his mother’s gentle prodding to find some. Eaglepaw was his friend, but only because he was his brother first.
He had come to the conclusion that friendship was hard, and yet Darkkit was offering it without any reservation.
“...yes, I’d like to be.” That much he could easily admit. He wanted desperately to be able to call such a courageous kit his friend.
Darkkit seals the deal with a grin.
