#s://i~ibb~co/XSL9CB1/foxglove~jpg He did not often come this far towards the forest of MistClan. Much of his time the last few moons had been spent near the cabin, establishing a home for himself and his companions. Establishing borders within PrairieClan's own land, a careful dance of expanding and contracting their claimed land as they settled. PrairieClan had danced with them for now, only sending cautious patrols to scope out their actions. It was only a matter of time, though, Foxglove knew this. He wanted to be the first to make a move against the Clans, whether it was their current unwilling neighbor or one of the other two. And so he found himself travelling further and further away from their homebase, scoping out the borders of the Clans with new, observant eyes. The last time he had been this far was with Lionwing. The memory was bittersweet. There had been no scouting borders and examining weakpoints then. Just the company of the golden tom had been enough at that time. Now, though, his focus was dangerously sharp, refusing to linger on the past and instead scrutinizing the transition of field to forest, where the misty Clan lived. Rumors has reached his ears of problems, trespassing and supposed kidnappings. Structurally the weakest Clan, perhaps... His attention was caught by a grouse, picking through some weeds near the edge of the territory. Birds were more common the close he got to the trees, he noted sourly. A bounty restricted to the Clanborn. Instinctually, he dropped into a crouch, taking creeping steps towards the bird and leaping once it made a move to take flight. The prey would be welcome back home when he returned, an apologetic gift for spending so much time away. As he landed, Foxglove realized that the leap had taken him past the border of the misty Clan. The scars on his neck ached at the memory of last hunt that he had done in Clan territory. Despite the unpleasant reminder, his movements were unhurried, grooming feathers from his face before moving to gather the grouse in his jaws. His ears twitched to catch sounds from the forest's edge, the only betrayal of the high alert he was on in regards to any approaching footsteps.

As they padded along the border dividing MistClan and PrairieClan, Lotusfire searched for columbine flowers, whose roots would treat the elders’ aching joints. It had crossed their mind to put the seniors out of their misery by slipping them some deathberries, but it would only be a waste of good poison. It wouldn’t be too long now before they joined StarClan. And it would appear awfully suspicious if they didn’t collect columbine roots to soothe their arthritis. After all, it was their duty as a medicine cat to ease the pain and suffering of others. Openly doing the opposite would cost them their place in the clan. Lotusfire believed that it would be much easier to destroy the clans from the inside. Their gaze settled on a clump of columbine flowers and part of them considered returning to camp to announce that they had been unsuccessful with their search, but they couldn’t risk a patrol stumbling upon the plant, which was visible from a distance. How could Lotusfire have missed this, they’d ask themselves. So with a sigh, they walked over to the flowers and began digging up the roots. They scooped up pawfuls of dirt and placed the loose soil beside them until they could carefully pluck the reddish root out of the earth, and repeated their actions with the next flower. Before they could collect the root of their third columbine flower, their ears twitched at a faint sound coming from closer to the border. Glancing between the direction the noise came from and the group of flowers they’d been gathering, Lotusfire wondered if they should investigate the sound or simply continue to dig up roots. It was an easy decision and they casually made their way toward the border, not bothering to hide their approach. When they saw an unfamiliar tomcat on MistClan territory with a grouse clamped firmly between their jaws, they immediately thought to just walk away and let someone else deal with it, but it was too late - their scent would be noticed here. Lotusfire would have to actually confront the stranger. “ That’s MistClan prey,” they meowed, their tone relaxed, as if they hadn’t just caught a trespasser stealing food. “ What are you doing here?”

#s://i~ibb~co/XSL9CB1/foxglove~jpg His swiveling ears soon froze as they caught the sound of an approaching form, and Foxglove slowly turned to regard the Clan cat. Truly, he wasn’t surprised by the appearance of a Clanner…they seemed to have a unique sense regarding their silly borders. Always eager to defend, as though there weren’t better things to be doing. Except…this cat didn’t seem eager at all, their calm and cool demeanor a stark difference compared to the conflict on RidgeClan’s territory all those moons ago. Despite the initial lack of abrasiveness, Foxglove found himself more on edge than he had anticipated being. “Actually, I think it was technically PrairieClan’s prey.” He said after a moment, mirroring the other’s conversational tone, though his eyes were narrowed as he observed them. His nose briefly jerked towards the territory behind him from where he had flushed the bird from. “Lived there, died here. Such unclear definitions of where it truly belonged.” Extending a paw, he carefully dragged the still-warm body closer to him. “It’s mine now, though, so I supposed it’s allegiance doesn’t matter, in the end.”
He paused, taking a moment to study the other. Dirt on their paws, smelling of herbs and medicine. Familiar scents, after his time with Lionwing. “Does your Clan typically let their healer wander this far on their own?” Foxglove could hear or scent no other lurking warriors in the trees, but he was sure MistClan could disguise themselves easily in their naturally misty grounds. “Especially with such dangers about. Talk of your missing youngsters has reached far, you know.”He could be a danger too, if this stranger pushed him even slightly. Was this cat's relaxed composure due to self-assuredness in their abilities? They were larger, older...but surely not as experienced in combat. Or did they think they were immune to the violence in the world, their connection to their ancestors protecting them? False confidence or ignorance. Foxglove wasn't sure which thought angered him more.

Lotusfire cared very little, or actually, not at all, about who the grouse belonged to. Medicine cats tended to stay out of that kind of stuff, but their rank wasn’t the reason why they didn’t care. They simply didn’t believe that a single bird mattered all that much when prey was plentiful and MistClan kept them well-fed. When the time came that they were starving pretty much all day for days at a time, well, maybe then they’d care a little more. They did consider antagonizing the tom just for the fun of it, though, arguing that prey became MistClan’s once it crossed the border and that an outsider had zero claim to prey caught on clan territory, but Lotusfire didn’t know how temperamental the small tom was, and they weren’t interested in treating their own wounds today. They felt very strongly that they could easily defeat the stranger in combat, but the other cat was younger, more agile, and would surely land a few lucky blows. Their clanmates desired peace and they weren’t willing to risk everyone’s disapproval if they returned to camp with a bloodstained pelt and a story about how they’d fought an outsider for a bird. It wasn’t worth it. Instead of trying to claim the fresh-kill for MistClan, Lotusfire simply shrugged and rocked back on their haunches. They were safe here. They could handle themself, but if the stranger did launch an attack, all they had to do was yowl. There were patrols all over the territory; someone would hear them. And then they could return to camp with a story about an evil outsider, a medicine cat in distress, and their selfless saviors. The stranger then mentioned MistClan’s missing kits and they tilted their head slightly. “ Has it? That’s interesting. A PrairieClan cat exchanging news with an outsider, perhaps? Or maybe the criminal doesn’t belong to any clan? We have been scenting loners on our territory recently - it wouldn’t surprise me if one of your friends likes to traumatize kits by stealing them away from everything they’d ever known. You’re an atrocious bunch, aren’t you?” Lotusfire chuckled. “ Absolutely heartless.” Their eyes sparkled as they quietly continued, “ Or rather, genius. Attack the heart of the clans by stealing their kits.”

#s://i~ibb~co/XSL9CB1/foxglove~jpg Foxglove's lips raised with a surge of anger at the accusation that the other was playing with. "How dare you-" he started, the rolling emotions meeting the immovable apathy of the other. What misplaced honor, that terrible angry part of himself thought. For innocent kits grow into corrupt warriors. Why value their lives any higher? Strange, how the innocence of youth outweighed their future as participating in the hostility of their Clans. Perhaps he should be a kit-napper, to remove them from the problem before they can grow into it. But he thinks of Leon's tiny body and cannot bring himself to stoop as low as those rogues, to take a child from everything they knew. It was a conflicted emotion, though. For the other was right...the disappearance had destabilized the Clan, and Foxglove knew that he and his companions could use it to their advantage. With a Clan balanced on such shaky ground, it should be easier to knock it down. "Even if I was the thief, you don't seem very concerned." He said instead as he forced himself to calm. The scorn was still obvious in his tone, head tilting to regard the other with distaste. No, this cat seemed impressed, if anything. "Is that common for you medicine cats? To not care about your missing young?" Barbed words to try and dig at the other, to try and pull some emotion other than that irritating smugness from them. He suspected that this snake wouldn't be bothered by the insult. "Knowing you Clan cats, it was most likely one of your own. Anything to prevent peace with each other."

The stranger was quick to anger, Lotusfire discovered, and while it was somewhat entertaining, the last thing they wanted was bloodshed. They weren’t a pacifist at all, no, they simply didn’t want to have to endure stinging wounds. As they stared at the other cat, studying their expressions and body language, they noticed how he tamed the fire in his eyes and forced the tension in his muscles to leave. However, he spoke to Lotusfire with contempt in his voice and looked at them with dislike. The stranger’s blatant aversion to them was exciting and they felt the urge to continue to provoke him, but reminded themself they didn’t want to return to camp with injuries. The tomcat asked if medicine cats tended not to care for missing youngsters and Lotusfire shrugged and there was laughter in their eyes as they realized the stranger must be trying to goad them. “ I wouldn’t know.” Their amusement was swiftly replaced with a frightening lack of emotion. “ Kits don’t go missing very often.” Lotusfire almost laughed when the tom suggested a clan cat stole the kits, but a moment later, they realized the idea was actually quite intriguing. Could they use that? Could they place the blame on a clan cat instead of an outsider, turning clan against clan? The other cat probably didn’t understand the importance of their attempt at an insult, but Lotusfire did. They gazed at the stranger with interest. “ What’s your name? I’m Lotusfire.” After publicly announcing they believed outsiders had stolen MistClan’s missing kits, they couldn’t just abruptly change their mind. They’d have to be subtle about it or think up a reason why they’d swapped opinions. Their tone casual, they continued, “ Is that really so terrible for you, the clans refusing to work together? After all, if they destroy each other, you outsiders wouldn’t have to worry about clan cats chasing you off their territory.” Lotusfire watched the tom closely to better read his reaction.

#s://i~ibb~co/XSL9CB1/foxglove~jpg A snake indeed. Foxglove had seen an adder once with his father, an eternity ago. Cold-eyed and still until the strike, the lesson had been hammered into him to avoid such a creature above all else. While solitary and simple, their bite brought death. As Foxglove found himself staring at this adder, he wondered if he should heed his father's words. A name. Lotusfire. Odd, to be named after something so warm and passionate when the other seemed anything but. For a childish moment, he was tempted to decline the other's request for his own name. "Foxglove." he responded simply instead. It didn't matter one way or another if this cat had his name. The knowledge wouldn't save them or their Clanmates if the information was passed on. "It's because of your tendency to avoid peace that deserves your destruction." he scoffed in return after Lotusfire's continued pondering, tail lashing as his carefully contained rage threatened to rise again, "I want nothing more than to see this land free from the control of the Clans." This was no secret. Foxglove didn't care how many Clan cats knew of his desire. It wouldn't change what he wanted and what he was willing to do to get it. He almost wanted to assume that Lotusfire already knew this, with the precision with which they pointed out Foxglove's intentions. "No, peace isn't what your lot deserves, Lotusfire." he continued after a moment, "...but I get the feeling that you don't care for the fate of your Clanmates, kit or not." There was his gamble, his accusation in return. Worst case, this cat's indifferent persona was a show and Foxglove had insulted Lotusfire's honor as a medicine cat. That would be fine. Foxglove had no qualms about bloodying his claws if things went south, even towards a healer. (What would Lionwing think of him now?) The best case, though? Here, he wasn't sure. What would it mean if this adder's venomous grin grew and they confirmed his accusation? Now it was Foxglove's turn to regard the other with increased interest.

Lotusfire was quite fond of toxic plants. They had experience with them, too, and had used deathberries a couple of times in their life, which was twice more than the average cat. They wondered if Foxglove had ever used deadly plants against someone, but he didn’t seem like the type. He seemed more likely to prefer to kill with his claws instead of with poisons. It was less deceitful to slash a throat than it was to sneak someone deathberries and Foxglove didn’t come off as subtle. Perhaps Lotusfire was wrong, though. They couldn’t deny that they wanted to find out what the tomcat was capable of. And maybe they would. Every word that escaped Foxglove’s mouth, they agreed with. The clans deserved to fall apart and they, too, wanted the valley to be free of the clans’ control. Moons ago, Lotusfire had realized they weren’t destined to rule the clans, but to demolish them. The rules the clans followed were damaging to every cat, clan and clanless, and they needed to disband if peace was ever going to settle over the valley. And if Lotusfire found some pleasure in the annihilation of the clans, well, that was just a bonus. Unlike every medicine cat in the history of the clans, Lotusfire cared very little for their clanmates. Of course, they’d never let any clan cat know or else they’d risk losing their place in MistClan. So when Foxglove made an accusation, one that couldn’t be any more correct, Lotusfire didn’t bother trying to refrain from barking out a laugh. Amusement dancing across their eyes, they chuckled, “ Is it that obvious?” They weren’t concerned about an outsider discovering how little they cared about their clanmates. Should Foxglove choose to tattle on them, they knew no clan cat would believe an anti-clan outsider over MistClan’s medicine cat, but they didn’t think he would do that anyway. Why should he, when they both shared the same goal? And if they both shared the same goal, why shouldn’t they work together? They had access to resources the other didn’t and vice versa, and Lotusfire was certain their idea couldn’t possibly backfire on them, because they had the clans’ trust and Foxglove didn’t. Their piercing gaze met Foxglove’s and a sinister smile curled the corners of their lips upward as they suggested, “ I don’t see why we can’t work together to tear down the clans.”

#s://i~ibb~co/XSL9CB1/foxglove~jpg Lotusfire bared their venomous fangs openly to him, lips twisted into a cruel grin that confirmed Foxglove's guess before they even spoke. An opportunity had just been opened wide, if he could look past the dangers of the other to seize it. An ally on the inside, someone with crucial information to let Foxglove know where to exploit the Clans, where to hit and where to avoid. Despite the opportunity and knowing Lotusfire's goals aligned with his own, Foxglove found his uneasy disgust towards the Clan cat hadn't faded. For didn't Lotusfire's own lack of loyalty speak volumes of the Clans, if one of their own healers was ready to tear them apart? A conflicting decision. Greed towards the possibilities while loathing the cat who offered them. His weight had shifted forward, the allure of the offer undeniable, though he didn't bite just yet. "How do I know I can trust you? You have everything to lose if you're discovered." Then you'll be worthless to me.

Lotusfire couldn’t care any less about how this discussion ended. Of course, they’d benefit from having a powerful ally, but they could also easily continue to go about their life without Foxglove in it. After all, that’s what they’ve been doing. Foxglove leaned forward, clearly interested, but also conflicted. Lotusfire was aware that they weren’t exactly coming off as a dependable cat, but they didn’t think either one of them should lie about how unlawful they were. They both knew how villainous the other was, so why try to hide it? Attempting to tear down the clans, taking out anyone in their way and destroying the lives of many in the process, wasn’t exactly a kind act. Foxglove asked how he could trust them and Lotusfire laughed, “ I have nothing to lose. I’m just as dangerous for the clans outside of them as I am in them. Plus, I’m a medicine cat - everyone trusts me. And I know everything there is to know about the clans. You need me.” If they could keep their alliance between the two of them, there was minimal chance of a clan cat learning about it, but they assumed Foxglove knew that already. Lotusfire knew how to be careful and could look after themself, and they weren’t at all worried about a clanmate discovering them. There was little to fear and Lotusfire was sure Foxglove would agree to an alliance.
