description
One of your earliest realizations is that you feel small.
Not just physically, though you and you brothers are some of the smaller kits in the nursery at the time of your birth.
No, you feel small inside. While your kithood knowledge doesn't quite have the words to describe the feeling just yet, you feel a desperate need to prove yourself. When Shrewthorn praises Rabbitkit for his clever pounces, you feel almost frantic to show your own talents. When Firepelt smiles as Foxkit makes the queens fawn over him, you feel an unfair twinge of jealousy to receive that same recognition.
So, naturally, you decide the best way to not feel small is to show everyone that you are big.
It's easier than expected. Your favorite brother Foxkit (and you admit this unashamedly) is easy to join in with, to add clever quips and playful games to his natural charm. It's not necessarily unnatural, as you find wit and humor to come easily to you, but you lean into these traits, trying to make them as big as you want to feel.
Your other brother, Rabbitkit, is quiet. Observant and intelligent, he embraces introversion at a young age. It's easy to pick on him, to tease him for his boring nature and boast when you beat him in games, even fi that happens less than him beating you. It makes you feel big, and it makes you feel good.
If you notice the growing resentment in Rabbtikit's eyes, you ignore it.
You and your brothers are lucky enough that your earliest friends become your best friends. There are two other litters in the nursery, one litter consisting of Silverkit and Sorrelkit (who are older, and bigger, so much so that you feel unfairly angry) and the othe litter consisting of the younger Shadowkit, Snowkit, and Juniperkit.
Your forced close proximity makes it easy for you and your brothers to befriend them all. Firepelt teases that he's impressed that you didn't scare them away with your constant chatter. That doesn't make you feel good, but when you see Rabbitkit's silent agreement, you loudly laugh and give your father a grin.
"They'd be silly not to want to be friends with me!"
Foxkit plays more with Silverkit, which is fine, you're not at all upset that you are encouraged to play with your younger and smaller friends. You don't really pay attention to who Rabbitkit gravitates towards.
Your best friend becomes Shadowkit. You feel slightly flustered by him at first...he is cool and quiet and polite, everything that you are not. He reminds you of Rabbtikit at first, and you are prepared to dislike him.
Unlike Rabbitkit, though, Shadowkit never overlooks you and Shadowkit always laughs softly at your jokes, sometimes even when some of your other friends are annoyed by your antics. Despite his maturity, Shadowkit doesn't look at you like you're small, and you quickly become fiercely loyal to him for it.
Your friend group is so connected that you forget that you aren't all the same age, and Silverkit and Sorrelkit's graduation to apprenticehood takes you by surprise.
It's Foxkit's sadness that alerts you to this first, though when Rabbitkit begins to criticize you for your lack of forethought, you are quick to cover up this new revelation (and new anxiety) with nonchalance.
Foxkit is unable to be convinced to join you in your pretend-confidence, and Foxkit is decidedly unfun when he's moping.
You complain of this to Shadowkit, flopped over beside him after he beat you at a game of mossball - you had assured him you let him win, and he simply gave you that understanding little smile.
"It's not like he's never going to see him again! He's just moving to a new den!" You huff, exasperated. You recognize at least some of these worries to be your own, now faced with the understanding that you'll need to be separated from your other friends for a moon once you and your siblings graduate.
"I'm sure he's worried there will be less time to see each other." Shadowkit says wisely. You like how smart Shadowkit is, especially since he acts smart in a way that doesn't make you feel stupid. "But you're right that it's only for a few moons. Then we'll all be together again."
You wonder later if he phrased his words in such a way to comfort you as well, as though he could sense your anxieties. Or maybe he has growing worries of his own? You find you don't mind either way.
The moon passes quickly.
Soon, you and your brothers are leaving the nursery, following the same path as Silverkit and Sorrelkit. Your heart pounds in your chest, your stomach a mess of nerves and excitement.
Shadowkit returns your nervous grin as you wait for your mentor to be announced and you can see Juniperkit preparing to take a big breath to crow you and your brothers new names as loudly as she can. Snowkit seems distracted, but it's a fond observation rather than a bitter one.
You are assigned to Pinefeather. A young warrior, you are her first apprentice. Foxpaw and Rabbitpaw both receive more experienced mentors, and you are initially hot with jealousy. Does your leader not think you are worth a proven and accomplished mentor?
You force your opinion to change, a new truth put together within the next heartbeat.
It's because you're so naturally talented that Wolfstar trusts a young mentor with you. This soothes the envy a bit, enough to be able to laugh off any comments from your fathers or friends.
Now in the apprentice den, you realize that Foxpaw's fears of not seeing Silverpaw for several moons had some validity to them. Your first moon of training is busy, from territory tours to learning about trees (boring) and birds of prey (less boring) and everything in between.
You had been so sure that you wouldn't lose time with Shadowkit and Juniperkit and Snowkit, but now your interactions are reduced to drowsy hellos around meal times and dozing while sharing tongues.
At least Foxpaw isn't depressed anymore. Being back with Silverpaw fixed that.
Pinefeather is clumsy as a mentor, you realize quickly. She's talented, but she's easily frustrated, especially as you call jokes across the training clearing to other apprentices and purposefully make mistakes to seeyour friends laugh.
Rabbitpaw calls you out on your childish behavior one afternoon, and Pinefeather is fuming and stumbling over her words in an attempt to scold you by the time she breaks apart your argument.
She's funny. Not intentionally, but you find enjoyment in ruffling her feathers, which is definitely not hard to do.
When you do manage to be productive with her, you learn to be quick and unpredictable, using your smaller size as an advantage rather than a fault. While she wasn't the best mentor, you are definitely the best apprentice.
So good, in fact, that Shadowpaw comes to see if he can train with you.
Well, you and Pinefeather, but you're quick to assure your friend that they don't need her.
"I've got everything you need right here!" You crow with a wink, and you enjoy the embarrassed smile you get in return. It must be true if Shadowpaw agrees.
Training with Shadowpaw becomes part of your routine for the next moon. The focus on both your own training and helping Shadowpaw eases your shenanigans during training, much to Pinefeather's relief.
You enjoy working with him. Shadowpaw never acts like you don't know what you're talking about, even if you sometimes very obviously make up reasons as to why certain moves work.
He likes explanations, but you often insist that some things happen just because.
Unfortunately, Shadowpaw's mentor puts an end to it. This is especially hurtful as his mentor is one of your fathers.
You know that Firepelt loves you, that both your fathers do. Still, you haven't missed the same disappointed exasperation that you see in the older warriors of the Clan, that you see in Rabbitpaw.
And, what...he thinks you'll rub off on Shadowpaw? Spread some of your failure onto him?
It's hard to convince yourself otherwise, especially as the time Shadowpaw used to spend training with you is now spent with Wolfstar.
You are conflicted, a whirlwind of emotions threatening to overwhelm you.
You're jealous that you aren't commended, you're proud that Shadowpaw is making a name for himself, you're confused at the why of it all, and, most of all, you're afraid that Shadowpaw now won't have time for you.
That small, bad part of you thinks to do something to ruin Shadowpaw's reputation. You could make him look childish and knock him off the pedestal he was being put on to come back to you and the rest of their friends.
Before you can think to act on the thoughts, you realize your friendship with Shadowpaw hasn't actually ended. He doesn't treat you or any of your friends differently and you still spend time together outside of training.
Huh. Wolfstar must not be so bad after all.
You're near the end of your apprenticeship. You know it, your brothers know it, the Clan knows it. Rabbitpaw has already passed his assessment and Foxpaw gives you a relieved grin as he arrives back to camp with Sagepelt and Spiderstorm.
It's your turn.
Pinefeather has joined the deputy, a nervous look in her eyes. She always looked nervy in some way or another, though...maybe she was anxious for you? You didn't think she cared that much, but her mood rubs off on you, leaving you more on edge than you already are.
You are quick to fill the silence with chatter as you and your mentor and deputy begin to leave the camp. You inform them of the prey you plan on finding, snickering a little when you mention wanting to find a rabbit (just to tease Rabbitpaw with later), but after several moments you realize the older warriors have stopped.
The group is still relatively close to camp. You were sure that assessments would take place deeper in the territory.
"Right here, then? Sure, no problem, I'm sure there's lots to find..."
You trail off as the strange mood from the start of the short walk hasn't lifted.
"Weaselpaw, I...we think you need some more time to reflect on what it means to be a warrior of RidgeClan." Pinefeather's voice lacks the nerves from earlier. She's serious.
"...what?"
Spiderstorm continues, going on about bullshit like what it means to be of RidgeClan and the traits a warrior needs. Traits you apparently lack. He doesn't say it, but you know what he means.
You aren't viewed as mature enough.
Your ears ring with shame and anger and grief as you stumble back to the Clan. Your destination is the warriors den, where you hope to find at least one of your fathers.
Instead, Silverpaw is who you find first. You're face to face with him as he leaves the den you're beelining for, and the concern, the pity in his eyes makes you angry.
It's not fair that you're the only one to feel terrible.
You say something cruel, diminishing Silverpaw's own successes with the simple intention to hurt before shoving past him.
You find solace with your fathers, weeping into their fur as they curl around you. They do you the grace of not agreeing with Spiderstorm and Pinefeather,, even though that small angry part of you is sure that they do.
Of course they agree. After all, they didn't want you holding Shadowpaw back.
Foxpaw finds you quickly as word spreads, and you stubbornly rub at your eyes as he makes the selfless declaration to delay his own ceremony.
It's touching, and you can't help but smile at Foxpaw's loyalty. You deny the offer, though. Rabbitpaw would be insufferable if he was the only one to graduate.
After a moment, you admit the cruel words you told Silverpaw.
"He'll forgive you." Foxpaw says it without hesitation, the words as factual as any of life's accepted truths.
You feel ashamed because you know he's right.
You make sure to tell Shadowpaw as soon as you're able.
You're terrified that he will look down on you, that he will realize that you really were holding him back.
Shadowpaw says none of those things.
The weight is eased off your chest as you settle into the comfort that at least your next moon of apprenticeship would be spent with your closest friends. Maybe it was for the best. How could you go a moon separated from Shadowpaw's comforting presence, from Juniperpaw's pranks, or from Snowpaw's (unintentionally) funny observations?
Your final moon of training goes surprisingly quickly.
Shadowpaw continues to spend excessive time with Wolfstar, to the point that their only time together is in the apprenticfe den. You don't really get why...there's still the worry that Shadowpaw is embarrassed of you, but you let him take the lead.
It would work out, surely.
Outside the den, you organize careful displays of maturity with Juniperpaw that you both giggle about back in the den. Snowpaw is distracted by...something, but really, when is she not?
You and Pinefeather continue to training together, but there is less focus on hunting and fighting. Instead, she frequently takes you out into the territory to simply observe. She points out the details of the valley from the elevation of RidgeClan's mountains and tells soft stories of RidgeClan history.
You do your very best to be quiet and mature (ugh, what a drag), but you can't help some of the quips you scatter into her lectures.
You think you might be getting better at not overdoing it when some of your additions cause Pinefeather to smile instead of roll her eyes.
You find it ironic that you're named in part after your sense of humor, when that was what delayed your ceremony to begin with.
It doesn't upset you anymore, though. It doesn't matter.
You're Weaselsong now, and all your friends are finally together again in one den.
Not just physically, though you and you brothers are some of the smaller kits in the nursery at the time of your birth.
No, you feel small inside. While your kithood knowledge doesn't quite have the words to describe the feeling just yet, you feel a desperate need to prove yourself.
