appearance
a scruffy grey cat with yellow eyes
--
Pigeonpaw has a rather unusual appearance from first glance, causing them to stand out from a crowd. They have medium-length dusty grey fur which seems to appear almost clumpy on their body, giving them a rather scruffy look. Whether this is simply how their fur grows or perhaps not having quite the right grooming regimen, it's hard for any cat in Pigeonpaw's life to say. Regardless of the reasoning, their name has only grown more fitting as they have gotten older with the way that their scruffy appearance almost falls on their body like the feathers of a bird.
They have large, almost owl-like yellow eyes that are often bright and full of life. Despite some of the rough hands that Pigeonpaw has been handed in their life, they always seem to be able to look on the bright side of life, which can be easily seen in their face and the way that they carry themselves.
They easily manage to take up a fair amount of room even with their average stature. Between bouncing around and simply giving off a happy-go-lucky aura, Pigeonpaw is always noticed the second they walk into any area. With a loud voice and a boistrous attitude, it translates quite clearly into Pigeonpaw's body language and in the way they try to bring about a light into the lives of others.

chapter 1: kithood
Pigeonkit was born in a small litter of two alongside their sister, Dovekit, to PrairieClan perma-queen Hailblossom and PrairieClan tunneller Rockwhisker. The first litter of the young couple, Pigeonkit and Dovekit were deeply loved, though even before they were a moon old, queens started to point out that something about Dovekit seemed a little off. Most kits by that age would have opened their eyes and become more responsive to the world around them, even if they still struggled to see or hear things around them. Dovekit, while certainly healthy, simply did not seem to respond to things at the same pace as other kits. Hailblossom assured the other queens that nothing was wrong with Dovekit - growing up was not a race, after all, and they weren't even a moon old! It wasn't as though the kits were going off to be apprentices tomorrow.
But her responsiveness did not get any better. To Pigeonkit, though, nothing seemed out of the ordinary with their sister. While they understood that maybe she couldn't quite see or hear them all that great, she was still their sister! At a very early age, desperate to play with her, Pigeonkit had learned a few little ways to communicate with Dovekit. They would tap different parts of her body with their tail in order to tell her different things, and she was still able to tell which cats were which by their scent. While she did not "speak" the same as other cats, Dovekit still had the same body language as any other cat, and by the time Pigeonkit and Dovekit were two moons old, they had practically developed their own little ways of communicating with one another.
Hailblossom and Rockwhisker had grown wary about Dovekit's future, and tried to encourage Pigeonkit to play with some of the other kits in the nursery, but they had become increasingly protective of their sister. While they would occassionally make time to play with Heronkit and Snowkit, or Bluekit and Oak-kit — all of whom were only a moon older — or even Smokekit, who was closer in age, they would dump the other kits to play with Dovekit any chance they got, worried that she might feel left out.
When cats around them questioned whether or not Dovekit would even be allowed to become an apprentice or whether she would be forced into the elder's den immediately, Pigeonkit began to talk about how she would become the best tunneller PrairieClan had ever seen. After all, she didn't need to see underground, and would be extra sensitive to tremors in the tunnels around her. Perhaps excited by this thought, Dovekit followed the scent of Rockwhisker into one of the tunnels when no one had noticed when one of the tunnels collapsed. Hailblossom had to hold back Pigeonkit, who screamed and demanded to help dig their sister out, but rescue teams were unable to find the bodies of Dovekit, Rockwhisker, or the other two cats who had been on the patrol.
At first, Pigeonkit drew into themselves, not wanting to leave Hailblossom's side. She was the only family member that they had left, after all, with both Dovekit and Rockwhisker dead. And after all, it seemed as though Hailblossom was also grieving the loss of her mate and daughter, though other cats had begun to push Hailblossom out of her shell, and hoping that perhaps getting her to do more would allow Pigeonkit to also push themselves out to be more social.
When Pigeonkit found themselves alone in the nursery, with one of the other queens forcing Hailblossom out, Snowkit was the first to approach them and offer to play. While perhaps a little reluctant at first, they slowly began to come out of their shell again, growing back into the kit they had been before Dovekit's death. While it was still hard to sleep at night, it became a little easier to get through the day when one of the other kits asked to play.
chapter 2: apprenticeship
As an apprentice was when Pigeonpaw began to truly thrive as a young cat.Perhaps it was something as simple as no longer going to sleep in a nest that still smelled like Dovekit when they breathed deep enough. While their apprentice ceremony felt empty, wishing that Dovekit had been beside them becoming an apprentice, perhaps it was time that they moved on.
They were assigned to a young warrior named Spottedback, whose sister, Brindlenose, had actually been in the same tunnel collapse that had killed Rockwhisker and Dovekit. So when Pigeonpaw's first words to her after getting their apprentice name was that they didn't want to go into the tunnels, she purred reassuringly and let them know that while they would have to go into the tunnels eventually, they could postpone it until Pigeonpaw felt brave enough to do just that.
Not long after they started their training, however, Pigeonpaw noticed that Hailblossom had begun to spend more time with a tom by the name of Ruddystrike. He had been one of the cats who had tried to push Hailblossom to spend more time outside of the nursery after Rockwhisker and Dovekit's deaths, and while they had not thought much about it at the time, they started to feel more uncomfortable with it, and instead tried to push themselves into their training and other relationships more.
As a young apprentice, Pigeonpaw began to spend more time with Snowpaw, Heronpaw, Oakpaw, Bluepaw and Smokepaw. Feeling a bit more distant from Hailblossom, they wanted to make sure they stayed social and active, and finding themselves spending more and more time with Heronpaw in particular. While the tom had often seemed more distant than other cats, perhaps that was what drew Pigeonpaw in - wanting to try and pull Heronpaw out of his shell in the same way that Pigeonpaw had forced themselves to come out of their own shell.
Soon enough, Hailblossom approached Pigeonpaw to tell them that they would soon have half-siblings. At first, Pigeonpaw was upset with Hailblossom, asking how she could move on from Rockwhisker, but she soothed her child, reminding them that it wasn't that she had moved on, but that she moved forward, something that really stuck with the apprentice. She said that she knew that Rockwhisker and Dovekit were still walking beside them as they moved forward, and her new relationship with Ruddystrike did not mean she did not still love Rockwhisker, Dovekit, or that she would ever stop loving Pigeonpaw once the kits were born.
It didn't take long for Pigeonpaw to get used to the idea that their family was getting bigger. Spottedback had also been incredibly helpful and open-minded, talking to them about how great it was that their family was expanding, and how Pigeonpaw would be an incredible older sibling for their new family members. So when Russetkit and Brightkit were born, Pigeonpaw had to practically be pulled away from the nursery every day in order to make sure they spent time on their training and spending time with their friends.
When Cinderstar announced that the tunnels would be blocked off for anyone under the age of 21 moons, Pigeonpaw felt themselves rather torn. They knew that they should have been happy about it - they had been so terrified about the thought of going underground where Rockwhisker and Dovekit had lost their lives, but suddenly the loss of not being able to move forward as Hailblossom had suggested made them feel a little torn. While they weren't sure they wanted to become a tunneller like their father, it felt like they had lost the opportunity to even choose.

relations
Pre-Plotting: Pigeonpaw takes a strong belief in the Peony role, not entirely understanding why everyone can't simply get along. After all, the battle is in the past, and it's better to live in the present instead of being sad.
Adopted from Tor's ad for Heronpaw's friends and family.
Family: Though now quite small, Pigeonpaw's family has always been important to them. The death of Dovekit showed them just how fragile life is, and how important it is to cherish the relationships you have in your life while you still can. It was hard for them to see Hailblossom move on, but their love for their half-siblings makes everything worth it.
Friends: Pigeonpaw would like to think of themselves as being friends with everyone!
Rivals: No rivals allowed. If Pigeonpaw has any "rivals", they are simply friends who they like to compare themselves to in order to help better one another.
