appearance
A slender, wavy-coated tom with nutmeg-colored fur and green eyes.
Heatherclaw knows he is handsome. Both with a striking form that is destined for a PrairieClan cat and a coat so shiny and silky, he stands out among a crowd. Except, his height does get bothersome to him. It's the very reason that he cannot become a tunneler. Still, he loves to see other cats looking up to him, rather than looking down if he was short. His coat is a deep nutmeg color, with his longer tuft becoming lighter. He has green-emerald eyes. One scar is on his left shoulder, which bothers him as it keeps him from being perfection.
description
kithood [0 moons to 6 moons]
They were the first born of this new generation of tunnelers. Proud parents, Gopherscreech and Brooksong, sat by as all their family members came in and out of the nursery to catch a glimpse at the newest generation. Three kits were born, named Heatherkit, Harrierkit, and Sunkit. All names that could draw them closer to their PrairieClan heritage. From the beginning, Harrierkit was an obvious favorite. She was super strong and loud, though Heatherkit and Sunkit didn't mind missing the attention, as they were determined to make every day fun. Sunkit was always inventing new games for the three to play, and while Heatherkit wasn't the favorite, everyone couldn't help but mention that he was the cutest kit of the nursery.
However, Heatherkit quickly had issues as he began to grow taller and taller at an alarming rate, so much more so than his sisters. He overheard his parents one night.
"Gopher, what will happen if he can't be a tunneler because he is too tall?" He heard Brooksong cry. No! He wasn't going to grow any taller.
Heatherkit tried so many things to prevent him from growing taller. He slept on his back, he had one of the other kits tie stems from his head to his paws, there was even once he tried to jump against the ceiling of the nursery to prevent him from growing taller (even though obviously he wasn't tall enough to even do that).
But, Brooksong encouraged him. "You grow now as a kit, you won't grow as an apprentice. You are just an early bloom, love," she told him. He believed it.
Despite his challenges in trying to become shorter for the tunnels, Heatherkit was quite popular among the other kits. Lots of friends and even some childhood crushes were definitely among the other kits.
apprenticeship [6 moons to 14 moons]
At his apprenticeship ceremony, Heatherpaw was quite disappointed when he was given a mentor in Possumfang, a reputable warrior. He was grateful for the opportunity, of course, but did his clan already see that he wasn't fit for the tunnels? Ugh, he'd have to prove himself and push himself harder than he thought.Possumfang was a great mentor though, and he encouraged Heatherpaw to continue his dream to be a tunneler. At first, everything was fine. The tunnels were a little short, but he was able to squeeze in the smallest ones.
However, he kept growing.
"I can't believe he is so tall! We were supposed to have a litter of tunnelers, Brook! Why couldn't he just have been a normal kit?" The tears welled up in Heatherpaw's eyes as he listened to his parents through the thick grass on night. The brown tom knew that his mother was never truly angry, it was not anyone's fault. But the guilt of not being short enough to be a tunneler consumed him.
Possumfang saw the change of attitude in Heatherpaw, and was able to comfort him little by little. The best way that he was able to get the brown tom to open up after this revelation was with teaching him more advanced combat moves than the normal warrior would have at his age of 8 moons. But, as Possumfang had hoped, Heatherpaw was a natural at combat.
Possumfang also took the apprentice to herbalist training with Juniperfur, despite his initial disinterest. However, the idea of collecting herbs really helped him change his perspective on becoming a warrior, rather than a tunneler. Being able to be outside in the light was worth it.
In addition, the flowers and flora that he collected made nice gifts for those that he was flirting with at the time.
Gopherscreech, though, hated the fact that Heatherclaw relied on his social skills and charm to get what he wanted out of a situation. However, his siblings didn't let it get to him. "Everyone has their ways of doing things," they would tell him. And with every "break-up" and relationship that he would go through, Sunpaw and Harrierpaw were right by his side.
Heatherpaw had passed his assessment right at 12 moons, but he waited until Sunpaw and Harrierpaw had perfected their tunneler assessment in order to graduate with his kin. Maybe it was his way of feeling as though he graduated as a tunneler as well, but no one will ever know for sure.
warrior [14 moons to 50 moons]
Turtlestar gave Heatherpaw the perfect name in his opinion. Heathersong. It perfectly captured his skills, his elegance, his passion. Alongside him, he liked the names of his siblings too, Suntail and Harriermask. Their names suited them, and it was perfect.Heathersong used his newfound freedom to become more independent. With being able to adventure as he pleased, and able to attend gatherings semi-consistently, they led to even more relationships and flirting that always ultimately failed.
But, in a spark of luck, he was the first sibling to get an apprentice at 17 moons. Perhaps his subtle and joking flirting with the leader did him well. Their name was Tumblepaw, and it was hard for him to start forming a relationship with the cat. They were the opposite of him, and they were shy as hell. But, this is where Heathersong found his passion for being able to teach the youth of the clan. With his first apprentice, it proved that Heathersong's most valuable asset was his ability to teach.
During the training, Tumblepaw gets offered tunneler training, where the apprentice moves on to a tunneler mentor at the age of 12 moons. It is bittersweet to the tom, but he is happy to see the apprentice find their passion. Maybe if I can't be a tunneler... maybe I can help others become them...
Immediately after, at 24 moons, there is a need for a mentor for the newest apprentice group, which happened to be his cousins by Brooksong. He is given Stonepaw to be a mentor to.
Stonepaw, as Heathersong sees early on, is in the same circumstances that he found himself in only 18 moons ago... Stonepaw is too tall to be a tunneler. He sees the grief within the adolescent but still encourages the tom to continue to try, with the help of Harriermask. Stonepaw finds the balance between tunneler and warrior training, despite his size, and Heathersong is thankful that Stonepaw has the opportunity he didn't.
At 28 moons, his first apprentice, Tumblepaw, becomes a full tunneler by the name of Tumblethorn. And only 4 moons later, Stonepaw becomes a warrior named Stonefur.
"You want to change my name?" Heathersong tilted his head at Littlestar with her suggestion. Two days before, he had managed to defend his clanmates against a fox, leading it away from camp before it could get too close to camp. While he thought it was ugly, everyone treasured the scar on his shoulder from the fox's claws.
"You deserve it. It's not everyday that a warrior does somethin' like this," the leader states. "Everyone wants to see you change your name."
Heatherclaw is what he is renamed. He doesn't like it compared to Heathersong, but everyone is so happy to call him by his new name.
Heatherclaw is given a new apprentice at 37 moons, which her name is Speckledpaw.
As always, Heatherclaw continues to try, but fails, at new relationships with his charismatic nature.
That damn tree ruined the valley, Heatherclaw determined, as he rushed above ground along Stonefur's command for those that couldn't travel within the tunnels. Valiantly, Heatherclaw helped in every way that he could.
"We did what we could," Heatherclaw tries to reassure Stonefur days following the fight. "We ended the fight. That's all that matters."
Before Heatherclaw could continue, numerous cats try to include themselves into the conversation, with Stonefur defending the tunnels.
Despite the hardships of the war and aftermath, Speckledpetal becomes a full warrior.
"Ya know... PrairieClan may be more friendlier to outsiders, but that doesn't mean you get to just cross whenever," Heatherclaw mewed, startling a tom that had found himself on the wrong side of the border.
"Oh! I'm sorry, I must have lost my way! Can you lead me to the border? I'm new to valley, you see?"
The brown PrairieClan tom nodded, as the two began to converse more. Skipper was his name, and he had recently joined up with the barn cats.
For moons, Heatherclaw and Skipper met in secret along the borders, with a true romance budding between them. It was the first time that Heatherclaw had really felt strongly about another cat. All his other relationships just didn't feel like this.
But, he knew it couldn't last, as Skipper had no interest in joining and Heatherclaw had no interest in leaving.
And just like that, Skipper vanished from the valley.
At 49 moons, as he wore his pride on his shoulder for being a great teacher of the clan, Patchpaw was assigned to him for training.
senior warrior [50 moons to present]
Littlestar is found dead... or missing. It's not really clear. She was a courageous, strong leader in Heatherclaw's eyes, despite the paranoia that the clan would whisper about from time to time.Cinderstar steps up to leadership, and like she owns the place, she bans the use of tunnels for those under 21 moons. What. The. Fuck.
Heatherclaw, despite not being a tunneler, can only assume and guess what will come of this... total ban of the tunnels. If everyone is forced out of the tunnels, then how will he shine among all the additional warriors around him? Selfish, he knows, but the saturation of warriors is not the correct way to go about this...
