One of the stones underfoot pops loose, clacking, clattering, and bouncing its way down the mountain path; Sable pauses to watch it, blank yellow gaze trekking the stone as it pings off other rocks, hits some low-laying shrubs, and finally vanishes from sight as it take a dramatic leap over the steep edge of the trail. Ears twitching, the smoke tabby takes a moment to listen further - the stone's continue descendent echoes, growing steadily fainter... but nothing else immediately happens, so it seems they are alone for the moment. Shaking a slightly stinging paw - the one that slipped when the stone came free - they glance down at their pawpad. No blood... They nod to themself, returning to their focus to task at hand: gathering herbs this new Kingdom was sorely missing. Besides the fact that little Zinnia and Eve needed their new home to be well-stocked for obvious safety reasons, it was also one of their new duties as a... Medic. It was weird, frankly, to have a title for something they'd done all their life; gathering herbs, tending to their sister, keeping others well... that was just what they did. But these clan cats - however much they like to slap "former" in front of it - like their fancy titles... And it was an altogether harmless one, so the smoke tabby had shrugged it off a bit ago. It was still new, but, well, it was necessary evil for Eve and Zinnia's new start. Pausing near on the walls bordering the old stream bed, the smoke tabby dug through the frigid layer of ice and snow, glad for the bright sunshine overhead. Old, dried up water sources tended to be overlooked as useless by most, but the soil under that first, dried layer was good for growing most anything, so Sable was hopeful to find a few types of sturdy winter herbs here.

The Kingdom hadn’t existed for very long, meaning camps were still in the process of being built. It was a lot of hard work, building a home, especially in the midst of leaf-bare when both herbs and prey were scarce. Cats were starving and weak and irritable, and Luca was among them. But he had a job to do, too, which led him to the mountain pass. He was on the hunt for sagebrush in particular, which he could swear he’d once seen growing on the mountainside, though he struggled to find it now. Hadn’t it been growing near an equally resilient shrub? He thought he’d checked around every bush in the area. Maybe he was in the wrong place. Before Luca could take one step along the border, the sound of a pebble tumbling down the rocky slope caused him to drop into a defensive crouch. The noise came from at least a tree-length away, but in the quiet of the mountains, the sound was ear-splitting. He waited for a lengthy moment, staring in the direction of where the noise originated. While The Kingdom’s borders were strengthening with each passing day, predators such as mountain lions and wolves had yet to completely grasp the fact that a new group had moved in. Every Kingdom cat was warned to be extra cautious outside camp as they established their presence. Luca probably should’ve asked another Kingdom cat or two to accompany him, a decision he was very much regretting now. But when no predator emerged, Luca wondered if he’d imagined the sound of a small rock rolling down the mountainside. He knew he couldn’t not investigate it, because if it was a wolf or a mountain lion or even a bear that had made the noise, he should warn his groupmates that a threat was within their borders. So he began to cautiously move in that direction, paws placed firmly but silently. When his gaze finally landed on a familiar smoky pelt, Luca breathed a quiet sigh of relief. He could now confidently believe the sound came from Sable, a fellow medic of the Riverwalker faction, and not a dangerous threat like a bear. They were digging and he assumed they were searching for herbs, too. He rounded the large rock he’d hidden behind, purposely kicking a pebble down the slope so as to avoid startling them when he was within striking distance. Once he’d gotten their attention, he greeted, “ Sable! Oh, am I glad to see you.” Luca bounded over to their side. “ I heard a pebble tumble down the mountainside and my first thought was that something big and dangerous was nearby. I was beyond relieved when I realized it was just you.” He rocked back on haunches and glanced down at the small hole they’d already dug. “ Searching for herbs? Anything specific?”

The pseudo-spotting of their pelt was more notable as a few clouds moved off, letting the crisp winter sun strike down at the land below; given the time of day, not much of a shadow was cast by the dried embankment they dug under. In all honestly, this was a foolish idea: not only going out alone, but picking a spot out in the open; they stood out like a rainstorm amongst group of white clouds, and if Eve was here she'd likely scold them for risky behavior - they were the perfect target for the large, predatory birds the mountains were well known for... But if the former loner let the possible risks of foraging keep them at home, then it was unlikely anyone else would go out. That was certainly the way it was when it was just themself and Eve, surviving on their own. Especially given how the group was stilling growing and most of the cats that came along prioritized hunting to anything else. If you want something done, they thought, pausing in digging to shake their paws - the ice and snow were cold enough to sting - you have to do it yourself. They weren't quite ready to completely trust this lot - this Kingdom - to care for their family they way they would... Their ears snapped about at the sound of another pebble skittering across the ground and their claws flexed, a brief tension seizing their frame... Only to be greeted by Luca. Blinking slowly, they twisted in place to face him; tilting their head in his direction, their curiously twitching whiskers were highlighted by the movement of the odd, single white one as it danced. The big tom bounded over to join them, uninvited and unprompted, but they bit their tongue at his intrusion; they needed to learn to play nice, for Eve and Zinnia's sake. And that meant putting aside their more asocial, introverted tendencies, unfortunately... At least their fellow Medic, from what they'd seen of the red and white tabby, was pretty harmless. "Hello Luca." They side-stepped his admittance, not sure how to handle someone being genuinely glad to see them, with a returned greeting and decided to tackle his questions instead: "Yes. The soil deeper down is good for growing all kinds of plants, so I'm hunting roots; nothing specific, but we don't have a lot of anything useful and flowers that bloom from one year to the next tend to leave root systems behind..." Columbine, Lousewort, and many other flowering groups were missing from the current herbs stuck which, while understandable given the time of year, was not good... They clicked their claws on the ground and decided, instead of returning to the task it hand, it would be rude not to return the favor: "And yourself?"

Starting from scratch certainly wasn’t easy. The medics only had so many herbs to work with since they hadn’t been able to prepare for leaf-bare, but as he searched, Luca learned that a decent amount of the herbs growing in The Kingdom’s territory were quite hardy. It was just up to the medics to look in all the right spots. Unfortunately, Luca had yet to memorize the entire territory, so he often found himself looking in all the wrong spots. And he didn’t even recognize some of these herbs, which made it hard to know what to look for. He’d never stepped foot in mountains before or even seen mountains until just a few moons ago. He was comforted by the thought that very few Kingdom cats had prior experience in the mountains, so many were still adjusting. But it seemed Sable knew what they were doing. “ And yourself?” Sable asked politely. Luca thought they didn’t seem very interested in his response, like they’d asked only because it was the courteous thing to do, but he also knew they were quite reserved for someone who lived in a group. Like everyone else, Sable was still adjusting. He’d seen the smoky-furred medic interact with their kin and figured it must’ve just been Sable and Eve before The Kingdom came along. Luca figured Sable was attempting to be friendlier, which he jumped to encourage. “ I figured since leaf-bare is the season for sicknesses, we should stock up on sagebrush. There should still be some leaves on the branches that we can use. I swear I’d seen a few shrubs around here, but I’m not having much luck finding them. I should’ve collected a few stems when I’d first discovered the sagebrush, but I thought it’d be easy to locate the second time.” “ The sagebrush can wait, though,” Luca said. “ I was thinking we should stick together. Y’know, since we shouldn’t have left camp by ourselves.” He chuckled awkwardly. He wasn’t much of a fighter - not because he couldn’t fight, but because he hated even the thought of hurting someone else - but if a wolf approached them right this second, Luca knew he’d fight to defend Sable. “ I can help you look for roots. Phlox roots would be best, I think, but I know we can’t afford to be picky.” Without waiting for a reply, Luca started scraping at the frozen ground on the edge of the path, beside the hole Sable was digging. And before they could form a response, before they could even register Luca’s actions, he was talking again. “ How are you doing, Sable? Are you adjusting to this new lifestyle well?”

Sagebrush? They headed cocked minutely back to the other side, eyes darting up and to the right as the vague image of such a bush came back to them. But that was a fair walk away off from here, more northwesterly than the riverbed border... He's lost, they realize. Not impossible to do, of course, and they'd heard many grumbles amongst the growing kingdom cats about the pains of learning a new territory but it was... humorous, in a way. Not enough to register on their face, but, still. That amusement vanished quickly, however, when Luca declared himself their new companion; there was a brief narrowing of their eyes at the audacity, but that was the only sign of discontent as the tom chuckled with slight discomfort. Their tail tip shivered violently but then the smoke tabby was as hard to read as the stones about the pair. The newly-named medic hackles raised, metaphorically, at his question as they held their tongue. How were they adjusting? Their bright eyes followed his paws as he started digging away at the snow and ice and dirt next to their own spot, following the movements in favor of stalling. It was far too prying a question for their tastes - it was personal and any answer they gave would be doubly so... And Sable had been vulnerable before like that, like this practical stranger of a tom was asking: it had not ended well. A bite had been taken out of more than just their pride, Eve had ended up hurt too... No, no, none of these cats had earned the right to know; Sable was not getting bit again just so niceties' sake. Unfortunately, they had to make this life work in the long-term for their family's sake. "Kind of you to ask," steeling themself so their tone doesn't give away the lie, they return to digging too: "It's going well.""More paws make light work." They settle on, acknowledging his help as they fjord on in order to leave the overly familiar subject behind, "We may have time to find the sagebrush you spoke of at this rate, too."

If Luca wasn’t a totally oblivious fool, he would’ve noticed how Sable narrowed their eyes in response to him pairing them together, but unfortunately, he was a totally oblivious fool and Sable’s dissatisfaction went unnoticed. While he knew the other medic was the guarded type, except for when they were with kin, he only knew this because someone else had brought it to his attention and he’d ended up confirming it himself. It wasn’t like Luca was watching Sable closely, no, he’d just accidentally gotten himself involved in some gossip with another Kingdom cat. But as he spoke to Sable now, he realized just how true that gossip was. Even a totally oblivious fool could notice that Sable didn’t reveal much when they answered his query. Luca’s digging faltered as he wondered how in the world he was supposed to make conversation with a cat who didn’t want to talk. Maybe he should leave Sable alone. Before he could make up some excuse that would only make the situation he found himself in more uncomfortable, Sable spoke again. “ More paws make light work.” Luca was confused. Did Sable just admit they appreciated his being here? “ We may have time to find the sagebrush you spoke of at this rate, too.” Maybe he should stay then. Although he’d made up his mind and decided to stay, his confusion lingered. Luca still wasn’t sure whether or not Sable enjoyed his company, but if they could help him find sagebrush, then he wasn’t going anywhere. “ That’d be great,” he purred, flashing Sable a grin before focusing again on finding roots, allowing silence to settle over them. Luca thought it was an uncomfortable silence, but he thought he’d try to be quiet since it seemed like that’s what Sable wanted. But it quickly became too uncomfortable for him to bear. “ This is a little weird, right? Maybe we should get to know each other better somehow.”

For a few moments, after having the audacity to purr at them, Sable thought the whole conversation had drawn to a close. A peaceful quite descended, in which the two of them dug in unison – making good progress, Sable begrudgingly admitted. Better and faster progress than they could have made on their own. The layer of permafrost gave way to the hard, dry and cracked riverbed underneath, which then gave way quickly to soil that becoming darker and richer and softer the further down Sable dug. The site was a pleasing one, because it meant they were right and surely the pair would have more roots to add to the meager stores in the herbal den. Just as they uncovered the first few pale spots of what had to be some kind of root, though, it all shattered. Like a fidgety kit, Luca broke the silence – and with the inanest statement ever; Sable paused, the mere suggestion flooring them. Weird? What was weird about companionable silence as a goal saw fruition? They barely, barely stifled the urge to roll their eyes and give the tom a long stare. Get to know each other? Get to know… each other? Highly unnecessary… But also, unfortunately, being nice to their fellow medic was important. Internally sighing, they tipped an ear in his direction, letting the big oaf know they were listening (if they were lucky, maybe he’d just talk and talk and talk and by the time he stopped, they’d have found enough roots for Sable to declare it was time to go find some sagebrush and then not have to actually say anything personal themself).
