#s://i~ibb~co/bQgPhgF/stone~jpg Dusk's sweet breeze tickled the edges of his fur, bringing with it the fragrant, floral scents of Rosemary Hill. Moments ago, that same breeze had been what led Stonefur here. Except, when he first caught the breeze, it also carried the scent of a stranger. He nearly missed it, buried under all the rosemary and other flowers that dotted the hill. But it was there — sharp and foreign, like a loner had wandered into PrairieClan's territory, and now their scent was drifting too close to camp. It was a futile effort to follow the scent through Rosemary Hill, Stonefur realized as he stepped carefully through the manicured grasses. It didn't stop him from trying. Midgecloud would scold me, he thought, mind flashing to the other day, when his brother teased him for his relentless efforts to repair a tunnel in the rain. But don't I have to follow it? The smell, however briefly he caught it, was undeniable proof that someone was prowling near camp. Near the nursery. PrairieClan would not be the next clan to lose kits. He wouldn't allow it. Yet... His senses weren't sharp enough to pick up the scent again. Whoever it was, they were lost to him. It took him too long to admit that to himself, and when he finally did, all he could do was hang his head in response. And then — a sound. His attention shot back up, fur along his spine raising in alarm as his ears swiveled toward the sound of someone moving nearby. Stonefur dropped low to the ground, belly scraping the grass as he crept toward the noise. He felt poorly hidden. The young new-leaf growth wasn't yet tall enough to hide all of him. Still, he moved slowly forward, until he saw a shaking patch of grass not two tree lengths from him. Surely that was— Oh. Stonefur frowned as the cat revealed himself. It was only Fogbreeze. Unsure of what to say, Stonefur only stared at the other warrior, waiting for some sort of explanation as to why he was stalking through Rosemary Hill.

It had been a while since Fogbreeze had lost the scent of a stranger floating on the wind. Jaws agape and honeyed eyes scanning, he'd scented and scented and scented, but shortly after his pursuit the scent had gone stale, drifting away. Rosemary hill was notorious for the scents that permeated the air and thus, made it all the more difficult to track a bounty. Now, he moseyed, eyes glued to the ground he tread, pawfalls almost silent. Now he thought to visit the clan's burial grounds and reminisce on his family. It'd been a while since he'd last seen his kin, and now he'd been left alone. Turns out one's unchecked rough, though harmless, exterior would drive just about everyone away. Who knew. He guessed he'd been spoiled by Stonefur's perseverance, when he'd deign to associate himself with the stout tom. Now he'd just have to deal with his own company. The tom huffed, the pungent scent of rosemary coating his senses as he padded through, feeling the dirt shift between his toes, his claws just barely scraping the ground beneath him. Working as a tunneller, spending most of his time in the dark, dank shafts, his eyesight isn't as sharp as his clanmates, so he was pretty much down two senses which made him slightly uneasy. Blades of overgrown grass snagged in his pelt, the grass rustling against itself as he moved, and much to his chagrin, he had allowed himself to be blindsided by the massive tom he'd only moments been thinking about. Golden eyes met Stonefur's. Ba-bum.Heartbeats passed. Obviously Stonefur wouldn't be interacting first. Of course not. A tufted ear flicked uncertainly - the only sign of unease - and Fogbreeze's mouth went dry. The frown the other tom threw his way caused disappointment to twinge through him, though he'd never let him know. Deep down, he'd expected no less. Ba-bum.With a twitch of his tail, an effortless smirk fell onto the tom's face, a familiar character taking over. "Well, hello there, sweetheart." He purred. "What brings you to the hill on this fine Sundown? Searching me out?" Fogbreeze winked, his eyes then sliding along the terrain. Obviously no one else from Prarieclan had been out here with them, but that didn't mean he wouldn't tease the other. "Or someone else?"

#s://i~ibb~co/bQgPhgF/stone~jpg For a moment, Stonefur thought Fogbreeze might not speak at all. He thought he might prefer that — for the other warrior to just dip his head in acknowledgement, then leave quietly, respecting the distance he put between them all those moons ago. There was a flicker of vulnerability over Fogbreeze's face. It was an expression Stonefur was familiar with, if only because, in short time as friends, he thought he was the only one who ever saw it. Fogbreeze wasn't a cat who let his barriers down often. But then those barriers were back up. The smirk that fell over Fogbreeze's face was more familiar than the vulnerability. Stonefur preferred that, too. It was easier to keep up his distaste for the other tunneler when he was playing games. Pretending to be more arrogant, more obnoxious, than he actually was. "What brings you to the hill on this fine Sundown? Searching me out?" No. "Or someone else?"No. Not in the way Fogbreeze meant, at least. Speaking sternly, he said, "I caught scent of a loner." He flicked his tail further west, where the scent disappeared into the cloying smell of rosemary. "I lost it. Now I'm going home."

Fogbreeze tsk'd at Stonefur's tone of voice as he responded, turning his gaze down to the earth between the two felines. His heart had slowed and the tightness in his stomach had eased the longer they stood there. General distaste for their presence would do that to someone. His fur tingled with unease, but he maintained that mischievous glint in his amber eyes. I caught scent of a loner. I lost it. Now I'm going home. "How boring. But I assume I was on the same trail as you, I also lost it some ways over the hill." Fogbreeze paused, observing the other tom. He always forgot just how much Stonefur towered over him. He'd never been unnerved by it before, but now things were different. He was unapproachable, distant, his height making him seem all the more unreachable. "Surely we shouldn't come back empty pawed? That wouldn't look very good on us. We've got reputations to uphold, darlin'." He purred. "Unless you might actually keel over from baskin' in my very presence for too long." The tone in Fogbreeze's voice was teasing, though he felt as though he spit out those last words. It wasn't easy knowing just how deep Stonefur's distaste for him ran and didn't seem to ease after all the time that had passed. Fogbreeze missed his company, and the way he let his teasing roll off him like water on a duck's back. Now he often thought twice about what he said, Stonefur's silence making his words turn rancid in his mouth. What he'd give to have things back to how they used to be.

#s://i~ibb~co/bQgPhgF/stone~jpg How boring. As if an intruder on their territory had any right to be called boring or exciting. It was neither thing. It was simply a problem, one they both had an obligation to take care of, regardless of how interesting they found it. But Stonefur knew better than that. Fogbreeze never cared about obligations. Still, it was some relief to know Fogbreeze at least tried to track down the strange scent. Stonefur thought he might storm away, carried off in a rage, if Fogbreeze mentioned not even bothering with that. "Surely we shouldn't come back empty pawed? That wouldn't look very good on us." Irritatingly, Fogbreeze had a point. Stonefur only acknowledged it with the slightest flattening of his ears. "We've got reputations to uphold, darlin'." And the most subtle dropping of his lips into a displeased frown. "Unless you might actually keel over from baskin' in my very presence for too long." "I'm not your darling." He started walking away. There was no risk of keeling over in Fogbreeze's presence. That didn't mean he was interested in being there, though, even if the other warrior did have a point about coming back empty pawed... Dammit. He had a point. "I'm going to hunt," he said, not speaking over his shoulder to address Fogbreeze directly, but at least raising his voice to ensure he was heard. "You do as you wish." It wasn't an invitation. It wasn't a rejection, either.

I'm going to hunt. You do as you wish.Fogbreeze hesitated. That... well, it wasn't an invitation but he also hadn't explicitly said not to tag along. Everything in him told him he should go off on his own, tail between his legs like a mouse heart but something kept him planted where he was. Whiskers twitched as he studied the back of Stonefur's head. For a few heartbeats, he couldn't will his paws to move. Finally, bounding to cover the space, he followed just beside Stonefur. "Now what kinda clanmate would I be to let you hunt all by your lonesome? The least I could do is accompany you. My eyesight might not be the best but I can sniff out a vole a tree length away." He was boasting. He knew Stonefur wouldn't be impressed. Why couldn't he just appreciate the small opening he was given and keep his stupid mouth shut? His heart picked up speed again, his lips drawing together tightly. He never thought he'd be here, hunting with Stonefur again, and suddenly he had bees in his brain. He waited for Stonefur to speak, if he even would.

#s://i~ibb~co/bQgPhgF/stone~jpg Fogbreeze's presence was suddenly overwhelming. Stonefur scolded himself for leaving room between his words — for letting the other tunneler think it would be okay to accompany him. He kept his face neutral (when did he ever not?) but his thoughts were a whirlwind of annoyance, regret, irritation, and... nerves. It was the last feeling he struggled with the most. Fogbreeze didn't make him nervous. Was it the thought of forgiving him that did? The idea of letting go of his long-held resentment? No. It's the thought of getting know him again. The realization washed over him not in a calming wave but in a drowning rush. His ears were ringing with the sound of it. He nearly didn't hear what Fogbreeze said, his words just barely making it to Stonefur's understanding. "My eyesight might not be the best but I can sniff out a vole a tree length away."What was so bad about getting to know Fogbreeze again? Maybe it was the guilt. Maybe he feared realizing that Fogbreeze never deserved his ire in the first place. ...No, that wasn't possible. Stonefur still remembered every vivid moment of pulling Raventhorn from the rubble. "Then do that," he said stiffly. "Sniff out a vole. Be useful."

Fogbreeze flicked his tail, watching the twinge of thoughts whirl on Stonefur's face. It wasn't obvious. Never was. But the way his eyes searched the area absently, he was far away in his own head and the muscles that tightened on the toms face were nearly imperceptible. He'd used to watch them all the time when things were right between them. Amber eyes searched for something more, but found nothing to work on. The fact he hadn't spat at him or told him to sod off had to be a good thing. Right? Then do that, Stonefur uttered tersely. Sniff out a vole.
He shouldn't be surprised Stonefur took him up on that. Whiskers twitched as he scented the air. He hadn't considered the pungent scent of rosemary clinging to his senses, his fur, the air. It was almost as if he were chewing on the sprigs himself. But there, just in the undertones of the the flora, there was sweet. Miniscule, but detectable. They were downwind, thank Starclan, and as he angled his ears he heard the scurrying of a small creature. "Smell that?" His voice dropped, directing Stonefur with a flick of his tail, his eyes focused where he suspected the animal was scavenging food. He didn't wholy trust himself to carry out the hunt. Like he said, his eyesight wasn't 100%.

#s://i~ibb~co/bQgPhgF/stone~jpg Some part of him hoped Fogbreeze would take his words not as a challenge, but as a dismissal. They both knew, as a tunneler, Fogbreeze was unaccustomed to hunting in the open air. So Stonefur quietly hoped that, when faced with something he could not do, Fogbreeze would simply choose to leave, rather than make a fool of himself. To his surprise, Fogbreeze lifted his nose to the wind and sniffed. "Smell that?" He nearly didn't. He certainly didn't understand how Fogbreeze caught the scent. It was the barest thing, not even a proper whisper on the wind. Yet still, Stonefur followed Fogbreeze's eyes until he saw the same patch of ground, disturbed just slightly by the shuffling vole. No, not a vole — what a humorous bit of luck that would be. It was a field mouse. Scrawny, but well worth bringing back to camp. Stonefur dropped into a crouch and crept for it. The hunt was swift, his large paws touching down on either side of the mouse after he leapt, his jaw snapping around it before the prey knew what was happening. It was a bigger mouse than he first realized. Despite it's size, Stonefur was confident he wouldn't have caught sight of it without Fogbreeze's help. He wouldn't let that make him grumpy. They were hunting. They were clanmates. They were supposed to work together. "Find me something else."
