nettlefang to my enemies, those were the best days of our lives when our hate made us feel so alive she / her - application |
Nettlefang had been deputy for a few sunrises now, and she felt like she was finally starting to get the hang of it. Assigning patrols was a learning curve she was still on, but Cinderstar was quick to help her with that and point out if she made any blatant mistakes. Like putting sworn enemies on the same patrol together, or something. Thankfully she was smart enough not to make the same mistake twice. She was also getting to know the whereabouts of all her clanmates better, and noticed someone that was usually there was remarkably absent from the morning patrols she assigned.
Turtlewhisker. Wonder what she's up to on this beautiful mornin'? She'd been meaning to talk to the cat ever since her ceremony... even she could tell that the tortoiseshell was less than happy when Cinderstar had announced her as deputy. She knew Turtlewhisker wanted it to be her, and maybe it was a low blow that Nettlefang was named instead... but she was an adult, she could get over it, right? Especially if she did her best to extend an olive branch? Nettlefang wasn't the best at peace offers, but hell if she wouldn't give it her best shot. The tortie would be a good cat to have on their side, if she could garner her alliance.
It took a bit of asking about to figure out where the other cat was. Most of the warriors were already starting off on their patrols, or returning to their dens to rest if they were assigned for one at sunhigh. She got lucky on the third try, someone who'd briefly talked to Turtlewhisker earlier and said she planned on going hunting alone today. They didn't know where exactly, though. Looks like she'd still have to do some sleuthing... it was easy enough to follow a scent trail once she found it. I'll just hafta find it then. Not gettin' any younger just standin' around, let's get a move on.

Thankfully it didn't take nearly as long to locate Turtlewhisker's scent and thusly follow it. It had been too warm the past few days for snow, but the rain washed away many of the old smells, letting you find new ones more clearly. Looks like the molly was headed towards the less muddy part of their territory, out in the fields where the sun dried up most of the standing water. That was where the rabbits commonly nested—they'd probably begin having babies soon, but why not keep an eye on them? She's got more gall than me if she's planning to hunt those critters on her own. I wouldn't call her a fool, but who hunts rabbits alone?
Apparently, Turtlewhisker did. Unless she planned to go somewhere else and was just passing by the warrens. Nettlefang spotted her as she crested the top of a hill, standing lower on the slopes. It was hard to make out the dappled cat, her colors blending well with the dark dried mud and dead grasses. Ducking her head to get the sun out of her eyes, she realized she hadn't thought much about how she was going to greet the other cat. Why not start amicably? "Mornin', Turtlewhisker," she meowed, voice even and friendly as she trotted down to stand next to her clanmate.
"Someone told me you were out huntin' alone, and I thought you might need a partner." Need, not want. If I go out on my own I never 'spect to catch much of anything—usually it's just 'cause I want some alone time. I'd hate to bother her if she wants some solitude, but I'm real busy and I don't know when we'd get a better time to talk. She'd hoped that maybe Turtlewhisker was in a good mood this morning, but judging by her expression... Nettlefang would not be so lucky.
