The sound of breaking brambles and snow plops echoed around the island. As fast as she could, the medium-sized she-cat bounded across boulders and logs in pursuit of a squirrel.
Not just any squirrel though. It was possibly the fattest squirrel that any cat had seen all of leaf-bare. It could easily take care of a whole litter of kits and their mother. Juniperbelly was well aware of the stakes of hunting in this season. She had her fair share of failures... more failures than successes in this weather. She did find the carcass of a chipmunk once though, but it was so badly frostbitten that it made Shadowgaze gag.
Her claws gripped the last log that she hurtled over before she inched closer to the rodent. Finally, she would be able to proudly waltz into camp with a pump piece of prey. The clan would finally adore her, and not just for her great sense of humor and friendliness.
However, before she even realized it, Juniperbelly got a face full of tree as she ran right into the trunk of one of the large pine trees that stood above the island. The she-cat grunted, before looking up the trunk, watching the squirrel climb up the bark as her vision swirled. "H-Hey! Get back here, y-you..." she called out, before the pain in her head made her raise her paw to rub the top of her dome.
Finally, the world stopped spinning enough for her to see the squirrel perched on the lowest branch of the pine tree, which was only a couple fox-lengths away from where she stood. "Oh, mousedung, come on!" she said, as she meowed standing up. The rodent began to squeak, almost as if it was taunting her.

#s://i~ibb~co/HdkBJdc/silver~png Silverheart was exhausted. It'd been a stupid idea, really, to come out this far alone. He had to set off early in the morning, before the sun properly rose, to make his way to RidgeClan's island. The first chunk of the journey hadn't been terrible, but the second part was draining, especially once he entered territory he hadn't walked through since before his accident. Each time Silverheart came out here to test his limits he went farther and father. Today, he was hoping to make it to the island. Except his stamina left a lot to be desired once he reached the fallen trunk, so he plopped to the ground instead of crossing, unsure of how long it'd take to recover from his hike. It wouldn't be a failure to turn around at this point. This was the farthest he'd walked since his injury and it was an accomplishment all on its own just to get here. Just... Silverheart had the thought that if he could make it to the island, then he would be strong enough to make it to the gathering place, and could join his clan at the next moon's gathering. Maybe he needed a little more patience. Maybe leaf-bare wasn't the right time for such things. He sighed. Then, just before accepting it would be time to give up, a familiar scent caught his attention. He scrunched up his face, wondering what Juniperbelly was doing out here alone, before his stomach churned with the thought that she wouldn't want him fussing. Maybe Foxflight and Shadowgaze were making attempts to be friends again, but that didn't mean all his friends wanted that. Still, she sounded upset. He couldn't make out her words from this distance, muffled by the river, but he could at least hear her tone. Swallowing back his nerves, Silverheart slowly crossed the bridge, relieved to find it steady under his feet. "Juniperbelly?" He called out once he saw her familiar pelt through the gaps in some bare underbrush. "Is everything alright?" This was a bad idea. She was going to snap at him. At least he made it to the island.

As she was trying to plot that pesky squirrel's demise, Juniperbelly heard something approaching from behind her. Unlike most of her clanmates, whom would assume it to be an enemy or a predator, her tail lifted high to the the sky as she waited to see who approached her.
She couldn't believe her eyes. It was Sliverheart.
The friend group that was made up of the three litters born together had been broken apart since the great war, other than some minor rekindling that happened around camp. As the big tom approached, her blue eyes grew sharp with happiness. It was as if the friend group had never stopped talking to each other. "Oh! Hiya, Sliverheart!" she squealed, with her pink nose scrunching as she smiled. "It's been so long since I've seen you, have you gotten taller? How's the stars up there?" Juniperbelly couldn't help but giggle at her own joke. A comedian she was, really.
Once the introductions were done, her face fell with a big huff from her lungs. "Well, I was having a great day until this squirrel," she sneered as she turned to look at the tree branch behind her, "decided to run up that tree." By now, the fat squirrel had managed to start snacking on a piece of food, likely a reserve that it had stored away for the winter time. She then turned back to the sliver tom. "Hey! Maybe you can help me catch it!" The she-cat excited burst out, not giving Sliverheart anytime to argue. "I can climb the tree to chase it down, then you can strike and kill it once it falls. Perfect!"
Juniperbelly then pranced off to investigate the squirrel's current location. It was on the lowest branch, which was a few fox-lengths above her. Another branch was above the one the squirrel was on, a perfect way to gain an advantage. And with the advantage, the squirrel would have no choice but to jump from the tree.
"Alright, Sliverheart, time for you to hide and watch me chase this squirrel!" It was at that moment that she leaped up toward the tree, but her claws were unable to grasp the tree correctly. As quickly as she jumped, the front half of her body smacked against the trunk of the tree, before she fell down again to the cold earth.
"Ow."

#s://i~ibb~co/HdkBJdc/silver~png "Oh! Hiya, Sliverheart!"Huh - what? Juniperbelly squealed. She squealed. It was a noise of delight and joy, like she truly felt both of those things at seeing him, despite the many moons it'd been since they last spoke. Silverheart couldn't process it, nor could he process the questions that followed her greeting. Instead, he stared dumbly at the she-cat, letting her ramble on about the squirrel. It was only after she announced her plan did he manage to remember how to speak. "Juniperbelly-""Alright, Sliverheart, time for you to hide and watch me chase this squirrel!" Did she not realize he couldn't hunt? Since returning to the warriors' den, Silverheart still hadn't had any success with catching something. And in the midst of leaf-bare, he didn't think it was smart to waste potential prey by getting himself involved. That squirrel could feed at least two cats, should Juniperbelly be able to catch it. Should, of course, being the operative word. The squirrel scampered off as Juniperbelly slid to the ground. Silverheart's paws ached in sympathetic pain to the bark that likely scraped Juniperbelly's skin, now stuck between her claws. "Are you alright?" He asked, disarmed enough by her friendliness to come closer. "We haven't hunted together in a while, but I never knew you to be bested by a squirrel."A tease. He was teasing her. It was gentle, like when they were young. Would she grow cross? Forget the delight she had at seeing him moments ago? Become angry with him, suddenly remembering they weren't friends, and hadn't been for ages? Or maybe... Maybe she would smile and laugh like she used to. Ancestors, he hoped she laughed.

Juniperbelly peered her eyes open as the world began to swirl around her, with the chattering squirrel being heard in the background while it ran away. Well, great. She knew that she should have tried to shake the tree rather than climb it.
The voice of her friend echoed while her vision became clear again. Her left paw lifted up to rub her temples after she sat herself upward to see the tom. "Y-Yeah, I think I'm okay. That just really hurt. There's tree bark all over my pelt now, though," she casually said, as if she hadn't just literally smacked full force into the tree almost five seconds ago. As he grew closer, her eyes were still stuck on the ground under her as he commented about her being bested by a squirrel. At first, she stopped rubbing her temple, before looking up to the tom with a bewildered, almost stoic look. A look that would surely read, "What do you mean by that?" However, it was a split second before she shook her head and began laughing. Like, really laughing.
"Oh, Silverheart! You are always so funny, you know that?" Juniperbelly slowly was able to regain herself from laughing so hard, before a smile still creased her face. "Yeah, Sweetberry always said that hunting was my worst area. She said I'd have more luck catching an ancestor in the sky than catching a bird," the tawny she-cat giggled, before looking toward where the squirrel was previously.
"Well, looks like he has more time to fatten up before Sliverheart and Juniperbelly get another chance to catch him," she snorted after her sentence. How dare that squirrel just watch her slide against the bark and have the audacity to run away, right? "But, thanks for at least coming to check up on me! How are you? And Sorrelstripe? Have you talked to Foxflight and Weaselsong and Rabbitfern lately? I have here and there, but sometimes they just walk away from me when I approach. Oh! What about Snowlight? Or Shadowgaze? Shadowgaze has been kind of... distant lately. Maybe we could find him and cheer him up together?"
Juniperbelly wasn't completely dumb, she knew that the friend group had some trouble reconnecting after the war and stuff. It seemed like it was some in-fighting that caused it, though Juniperbelly was too focused on being involved in the war to really understand it. All she knew is that she was doing as the clan needed, and it was a cause she could apply herself to. "I was originally thinking of maybe grabbing that squirrel and taking it to him as a gift, but now that it's gone, I have no idea."

#s://i~ibb~co/HdkBJdc/silver~png The look on Juniperbelly's face made his blood run cold. He'd never seen her look that stoic, even during the tensest parts of the moons where their friendship fell out. And then, just as suddenly as the expression crossed her face, it dissipated. The air between them was filled with her joyous laughter, a sound so beautiful to him it brought pinpricks of tears to the corner of his eyes. "I would think catching an ancestor is more impressive than a bird," he said, managing to squeeze the words out through his tight vocal chords. He cleared his throat after speaking, letting Juniperbelly go on her ramble about the squirrel, which quickly blended into seemingly endless questions about their old friends. "I have here and there, but sometimes they just walk away from me when I approach."His heart ached in solidarity. Had he not noticed how abandoned Juniperbelly felt, too? Once, they'd been on opposite sides of a pointless, terrible war. But now Silverheart was realizing they were more alike than he thought - swept up in their beliefs, only to be left behind by the cats they thought loved them most. "Sorrelstripe is as sharp as always." He smiled, his voice much looser than moments ago. "And I've talked to Foxflight and Shadowgaze," he said softly. "They seem well." Shadowgaze, unlike in their youth, was impossible for him to understand. But he was happy enough that they were speaking again. "I was originally thinking of maybe grabbing that squirrel and taking it to him as a gift, but now that it's gone, I have no idea."Resolution filled his chest. "It seems we'll have to find another squirrel," he said. "So you can bring it to him. I'm not much for hunting lately, but my senses are still sharp. I'll help you track something down." Except, after the noise Juniperbelly just made, it would be a few minutes before they could hunt again. The forest needed to settle first. "Have you been keeping yourself busy lately?"

'cause you are each other |
While Juniperbelly tried to feel like a kit again as much as she could through her antics and humor, this moment really felt like it. More than she had experienced since the war. It was as if the two of them transformed back to the nursery all those moons ago. Hearing their laughter echo between the two of them gave her hope. Hope that maybe someday, possibly, things could go back to the way they were.
The she-cat's tail wagged happily as Silverheart gave a status report of all their friends, with a small hum coming from her after each mention. It was good to see that everyone was still able to recover from the war, and that most were still on at least small-talk terms.
Silverheart's mention of waiting for another squirrel made her paws dance in anticipation. "Oh, that's a swell idea! I was not one for tracking that much. I'm better at hunting and fighting than anything," she purred warmly, despite her knowledge that she really wasn't good at anything. However, if comparative, she guessed that hunting and fighting were slightly above anything else. "Maybe that squirrel will come back if we are realllllllllly quiet," the alabaster she-cat whispered in a hushed tone toward the tom, leaning in slightly as if to shield her plan from any other cats trying to eavesdrop.
"I've been doing lots!" she began to answer the tom's question. "I've been trying to ask Mushroomstar for an apprentice soon, but... he doesn't seem interested in the idea. Probably just waiting for the right apprentice to give me." Hopefully, at least. She'd hate if it was because of her lack of tenacity in any skill. "But, I've been trying to see if there's anything else I can do around camp. There seems to be a lot going on around camp, especially after the Kingdom, so I'm trying to see if anyone needs help with anything!"
Her eyes shined with enthusiasm. Really, someone could give her a task to guard a rock, and she would be satisfied. "Do you know of anything that someone might need help with?"

#s://i~ibb~co/HdkBJdc/silver~png An apprentice? After a brief consideration, Silverheart thought Juniperbelly would be just the sort of mentor a young cat would want. She was excitable and energetic - perfect for keeping up with young cats. And she always seemed to have a fresh idea of how to spend her day. No apprentice would get bored with a mentor like that. Maybe a very serious apprentice would struggle with Juniperbelly, but he'd been a serious apprentice, and even he thought he would warm up under her attention. Still, he could see why Mushroomstar was hesitant. There weren't many apprentices right now - though there would be, when new-leaf and green-leaf came, he hoped - but there were plenty of experienced RidgeClan warriors who deserved an apprentice. Calmer ones, too. It was easy to see a leader being concerned about Juniperbelly's focus. "You're right, he's probably waiting for the right apprentice.""There seems to be a lot going on around camp, especially after the Kingdom, so I'm trying to see if anyone needs help with anything!" Mention of the Kingdom seemed to come from nowhere. Silverheart blinked, then chuckled. Maybe he couldn't follow Juniperbelly's thought process, but he could at least appreciate that she was trying to be helpful. "Do you know of anything that someone might need help with?""That's a good question. I know Rainstorm always needs help with collecting herbs, especially in leaf-bare." He nodded, agreeing with himself. "She's only one cat. She can't check the whole forest for whatever herbs survive the snow." Sometimes he helped her, but lately he'd been focused on retraining himself. Walking long distances. Sparring a little. Tracking. No hunting, not yet. The thought occurred to him practically as he spoke it. "I could use help, actually," he said. "I've been looking for sparring partners who'll take it easy on me while I learn how to spar with one less leg." Not that the leg was gone, it just felt like dead weight most of the time. "I'm not a proper apprentice, but you could think of it as practice for one?"

Her ears fluttered with the noises of the tree branches behind her on the island, and if it wasn't for her devotion to talk to her old friend, she likely would have strayed her attention away. But Sliverheart's voice gave her the comforted feeling of familiarity, back when everything seemed normal in the valley before the big battle in MistClan. Her pale fur stood up slightly due to the bitter cold, though her heart felt warm in his presence.
The encouraging words that Juniperbelly would hopefully have an apprentice soon made her wag her tail happily. To be able to help the future of the clan in the way that Sweetberry helped her, it would be a complete circle to her. "You really think so?" Her head tilted against the wind to make her ears stick out straight from the side until she turned back. "I know there are some kits about to turn 6 moons, so I really hope that I will be able to teach one of them."
The taller tom continued to give Juniperbelly some ideas on making herself feel useful around camp. Of course, it should have been a no-brainer to her that Rainstorm would need help. Maybe she thought Frostpaw was enough assistance, but it wouldn't hurt to be on the lookout for any herbs that are needing to be collected. "Especially with spring around the corner, there will be lots of herbs growing around. Good thinking, Sil-vee!" she mewed with a high-pitched trill at the end. "I'd also love to help you spar! You're right, it could be good to get some practice before I have a little kit running around to teach. That way, I can prove to Mushroomstar that I'm, like, the best teacher ever!" The shell-colored she-cat couldn't help but smile. "I'm usually on the sun-high patrols, so we could do it in the evening sometime if you would like."

#s://i~ibb~co/HdkBJdc/silver~png Relief fluttered in his chest when Juniperbelly perked up at the thought of helping Rainstorm. So much of their youthful friendship was still seared into Silverheart's thoughts. He knew how easily distracted Juniperbelly could be, how desperate she was for something to do. Back then, he always worried about her getting bored, and turning toward something reckless. He still worried about it, but with Wolfstar and his violence a dark scar on their past, the worry came from a different place. Still, he didn't want to overstep. His friendship with Foxflight and everyone else ended in part because he was overbearing. Silverheart wouldn't fall into that trap again, no matter how easy it was. Especially not with Juniperbelly speaking so casually around him again. The nickname made him warm. He didn't want to lose that again. "I agree. I'm sure you'll prove yourself to Mushroomstar in no time." He could actually think of little reason why Juniperbelly wouldn't be given an apprentice soon, unless Mushroomstar was aware of something he wasn't. Or maybe he was more aware of her attention issues than Silverheart gave him credit for. Or maybe RidgeClan's reduced birth rates recently was just finally rearing its head. The warmer seasons should change that. "The evening would be great. I've still yet to be assigned to regular patrols again, so my schedule is flexible."A chittering from deeper in the trees caught his attention. Silverheart turned his attention toward the sound, then looked back at Juniperbelly. "I think I hear the squirrel from earlier." Or a squirrel, at least. "How do you feel about going after it while I rest my leg a bit, and then we can walk back to camp?"
