It was early in the morning. The first morning Redberry ever lived without her mother. The slender molly sat atop a hill, gazing across the prairie that didn't feel familiar. When Littlestar had gone missing, she and Rosethorn had been the first to volunteer for the search party. It was so unlike their mother to simply disappear. Every hair on her pelt was bristling, her heart was pounding as they worked their way through PrairieClan's land. Finally, after hours, they came to the RidgeClan border and caught her scent. Though her mother was from RidgeClan, she found it hard to believe that she would return for any reason. It wasn't long before the patrol uncovered both blood and Littlestar's notable brown and white fur. Choked with grief, the usually-composed Redberry had collapsed and cried out for justice. Who could have done this? Where was her body? With so many questions unanswered, she leaned heavily on Rosethorn for support.
Her sleep had been fitful, filled with terrifying dreams of her mother's small white face. Why had she left? What was she looking for? This was what Redberry pondered on this morning as she gazed across the land. She and Littlestar had grown especially close in Rosethorn's absence. The elder molly had taught her a lot about leading and being a good clanmate. She felt she finally looked at her mother as a friend. Then she'd grown...odd. Foggy, disturbed. Her pelt was unkempt, eyes blank. What was it that troubled her so? Why didn't she seek counsel from her daughters before disappearing?
Redberry's heart clutched with grief as she remembered being curled up at her belly; her scent had been the first one she'd ever known. And now she was gone. She would never smell her again. Redberry had never known her father, but his absence hurt more now that Littlestar was gone as well. Every cat had to lose their parents sometime, but she and Redberry were hardly adults. Why was she taken so soon?

After searching all over, Rosethorn finally spotted Redberry sitting atop a hill, looking out over the prairie. Littlestar had disappeared just the day before and already, cats were saying she was dead. Of course, Rosethorn refused to believe it, but it seemed everyone was ready to move on. Cindersong was even preparing to head for the Mooncave soon to accept her nine lives and new name. Her clanmates gave up on Littlestar so quickly. Did Littlestar mean nothing to them? She and Redberry had been the ones to find the spot where Littlestar disappeared. Finding that clump of their mother’s blood-stained fur had been devastating. They’d known immediately that something terrible had occurred and Rosethorn suspected RidgeClan had something to do with it - perhaps to disturb the alliance between PrairieClan and MistClan. But it was important to Rosethorn that she help her sister cope instead of letting herself focus on RidgeClan’s wickedness. Redberry had relied heavily on Rosethorn for comfort upon discovering their mother was gone. While Rosethorn dealt with their mother’s disappearance by burying her grief beneath anger, Redberry let sadness rush through her. Naturally, she felt protective of her littermate, more than she usually did, and they even slept in the same nest the night before. She’d snapped at any clanmate who dared to approach them, wanting nothing more than to mourn with her sister without some cat interrupting to offer half-hearted condolences. Somehow, Rosethorn had managed to fall asleep after such a horrible day and when she’d woken up the following morning, Redberry hadn’t been in the nest, though her spot was still slightly warm. She’d looked everywhere for her sister and breathed a sigh of relief when she finally found her. Rosethorn padded up the hill to join Redberry, making sure to place her paws down heavily so as to avoid startling her littermate. “ Mum wouldn’t want you to let your grief control you,” Rosethorn said. Rosethorn hadn’t felt a strong connection to her clan and kin - minus Redberry - until she’d returned to PrairieClan after spending a short time away with a friend. Rosethorn had developed stronger bonds with her family upon her return, but she had disagreed with many of Littlestar’s views. That didn’t mean she didn’t love her mother any less, though. She’d watched Littlestar deteriorate before her disappearance, which hadn’t been easy to witness, and part of her had already grieved for the mother she’d once known. Maybe that made Littlestar’s disappearance a little easier for her. “ It kills me, not knowing what happened.” Rosethorn sat beside Redberry and narrowed her eyes against the dawn light as she looked out over the prairie. “ I’ve re-lived yesterday countless times already, wondering what I could’ve done differently, but I’ve realized that mum wouldn’t want me to blame myself. All we can do is hope that we will see her again, in this life or the next.”

As paws crunched on the dry grass behind her, Redberry turned to see who it was with her ears pressed against her head. Her sad eyes met Rosethorn's bright green optics and she gave a half-hearted smile. She was glad her sister came to find her. Despite having isolated herself this morning, being alone was hardly a comfort for the social molly.
Rosethorn's softly-spoken advise would only make her eyes well with tears. It was true. Littlestar would've told her to lift her chin and stay strong. But what kind of child didn't grieve their mother? She looked at her sister with unbridled sadness. "I miss her." Was all she could muster for the moment, dropping her head in defeat. “It kills me, not knowing what happened.” Redberry listened on as her twin communicated her own feelings, seemingly as lost as she was by their mother's disappearance. She felt a surge of anger as she recalled the way the others seemed to close the case as soon as they found a piece of their leader. Were they really so eager to be done with her? She shook her head and sighed, turning back to Rosethorn once again. "It's...It's awful how they're acting. Mum lead them for a long time. And now we find evidence of foul play with RidgeClan and Cindersong just brushes it off and makes plans to head for the Moon Pool? A kidnapping isn't retirement, Rosethorn. For all we know she could be a captive there!" Redberry choked out, her mew laden with sobs. Was Cindersong's ambition greater than her care for others? Her predecessor?
She took a deep breath and tried to calm down, her paws shaking. "I'm sorry. I'm trying to stay in control." she said quietly, her ears still flat against her skull.

“ I miss her,” Redberry murmured, head bowed in defeat, and Rosethorn’s heart broke. She fought back the tears that threatened to stream down her cheeks and tried to ignore the feeling of her heart clenching painfully. Ever since discovering their mother was missing, Rosethorn had done her best to appear strong, placing a stoic expression on her face and carrying her head high, but she’d witnessed her sister’s distress one too many times and felt her act slowly crumbling. She was strong, she truly believed she was, but wouldn’t the toughest of cats fall apart at the sight of their loved one’s anguish? She’d always had a soft spot for her littermate. Rosethorn loved Redberry so much that she was the only cat who could actually hurt her. Luckily for Rosethorn, there was too much goodness in Redberry’s heart and her sister would never cause her any harm - at least, not intentionally. Voice thick with emotion, Redberry went on about how their clanmates were quick to move on. Rosethorn nodded in agreement until her sister said something about Littlestar being held captive by RidgeClan. She hadn’t considered that. She’d assumed RidgeClan had something to do with her mother’s disappearance, like maybe assigning an outsider the job of making Littlestar vanish, or maybe they’d killed her themselves and buried her body in an attempt to hide what they’d done. Rosethorn just didn’t know. Surprisingly, she wasn’t angry about her mother’s disappearance. She was sure that eventually she would get mad and become one of the loudest voices criticizing RidgeClan, but not yet. Not while her sister needed her to be the rational one right now. However, she knew that later she’d use this moment, specifically her littermate’s distraught expression and heart-wrenching sobs, to fuel her rage. Rosethorn frowned as Redberry apologized and shifted over so she was pressed firmly against her sister’s flank. She planted an affectionate lick between the other she-cat’s ears and murmured, “ Mum wouldn’t think any less of you if you let your grief control you. She wouldn’t want that, of course, but what parent would? It’s okay to mourn. I didn’t mean to imply you shouldn’t. But don’t forget that I’m here for you and our brothers are, too. What I’m trying to say is that we still need you, so don’t get lost in your grief.” Rosethorn paused, closing her eyes against the dawn light for one lengthy moment before blinking them open, her eyes narrowed, and continuing with a bitter tone, “ I understand how you feel. About our clanmates. It feels like a betrayal, the way they’ve moved on so easily. If Cindersong doesn’t do anything about mum’s disappearance, you know we’ll have to. RidgeClan can’t get away with whatever they’ve done to mum.”
