territory overview
Whitewater's setting takes inspiration from the mountainous northwestern United States, with rolling plains, rocky mountains and rapids, and sprawling forests. The three Clans will feel the effects of all four seasons, battling for survival against predators, severe weather... and each other. The territories span from the rocky hills of RidgeClan, which sweep down to the lush plains of PrairieClan. Bordering them to the east is MistClan, who find their home in a dense forest pressed against the hills. West of RidgeClan, the pine forests thicken as the ground slopes downhill, becoming wetter with deeper shade and more lush vegetation pressed against the river. In the hills not far from their outer border, two-legs have built a nest which they inhabit during Green-leaf. While they let their kittypets roam, these cats know better than to cross the border. To PrairieClan's south is a vast stretch of pasture, cattle and horses dotting the landscape. Loners roam these lands, but PrairieClan's primary relationship is with the barn cats. Envoys from both groups frequently journey to each other's homes to share tongues, trade knowledge, and barter for herbs they can't find elsewhere—most especially catmint, which grows plentifully in the two-leg gardens. The forest continues east of MistClan for quite a distance. About a day's dedicated travel from their border is a strange two-leg place, shrouded deep in the woods with many two-legs coming and going. They're more active in green-leaf, with leaf-bare seeing the two-leg place mostly abandoned. The purpose of this place is a mystery, but the two-legs rarely venture too close to the border and they don't seem to present any real threat. A large river cuts through all their territories, starting in the hills and dropping in a dramatic waterfall, where it makes a wide pool before traveling south-west. The river isn't the only source of water, however, as small streams and pools vary across the landscape. Herds of traveling elk and deer are a common sight and, occasionally, there will even be a roaming band of bison. In the center of the three territories lies the gathering place, a rocky clearing that borders the river in a steep cliff. After the death of a too-curious apprentice many, many seasons ago, all three Clans came together to weave a barrier of bramble and branches to block off the edge. The Mooncave is located in MistClan territory, but there is an agreement that any cats traveling to commune with StarClan may pass freely. The cave yawns into a tunnel, which narrows as it winds deeper into the hills. After traveling in complete darkness, it finally opens into a chamber, moonlight filtering from above and turning the small waterfall to silver as it empties into a pool.
