Ryewhisker couldn't take it anymore. After the evening of weaving grass together, the exhaustion took the tom over full swing. It had been hard for him to sleep recently due to recurring nightmares over and over again. It was the same dream every time, but it was almost like each time it got more and more scary. They were used to the nightmares and the sleepless nights, but not this many in a row. With permission from the deputy, the siamese-colored cat was going to try to take the rest of the day to rest and sleep finally. However, Ryewhisker knew he would need assistance. Ever since he had come from the terrible incident with Boulderclaw, it was almost like he depends on herbs to sleep. Otherwise, it would take them forever to fall asleep after tossing and turning in their nest. And a few scolding remarks from the senior warriors listening to the shuffling. Ryewhisker trotted his way over to the medicine cat den, before glancing in. Usually, he could see the outline of Lotusfire inside. To be frank, that cat scared the tom to death. It was as if their gaze could burn holes through the very grass walls that surrounded the camp. The tom shuttered. However, they didn't see the medicine cat inside, so they entered the medicine cat den. The cream-and-brown cat paused to take a look around, only to see the smaller, calico she-cat working. The tom remembered her when she was Spottedkit. He often saw her bouncing around the camp as he was fortifying the dens, or when he guarded the nursery during the invasion of Ridgeclan. The rumors of her seeing starry cats in her dreams had circled the rumor mill many times, and he had always been so infatuated with the idea. "H-Hey, Spottedpaw," he quietly mewed, as he tried his best not to startle her during her work. "I-I was told to uh, take the rest of the day off... haven't been sleeping." They paused, hoping she wouldn't pry. However, he knew it was her job to ask questions also. "C-Could I have some her-herbs to sleep? Just so I don't bother Breezestrike and Ravenleap with my shuffling later tonight," he chuckled at the end, making the flat-joke more awkward than funny to most cats.

Spottedpaw found working in the medicine den to be much easier and calmer on her mind without Lotusfire there. Was that bad to say about her mentor? She wasn't the only cat to feel that way, and in the beginning of her apprenticeship, many of the others asked how it was like working with the prickly and cold Medicine Cat. It wasn't unbearable, but they did make her feel useless at times. It was hard to supersede expectations if she wasn't given any clear ones. Most of the time Lotusfire gave her chores to do. She didn't mind some of them, especially when it came to the elders. It wasn't glorious work, but it needed to be done. But with others, it felt like they were just trying to be rid of her. With them gone from the den, she took the time to look over each herb, quizzing herself in her mind as to its uses and application - and was notably very careful to return them to the place Lotusfire had sorted them into. She had been lost in her own thoughts when she felt a presence come into the medicine den, the form eclipsing the light. Her stomach dropped then, certain it was her mentor. But as her nose twitched, Lotusfire's scent wasn't any stronger than before. Feeling a bit more encouraged, she turned when her name was called. They weren't here to see Lotusfire, but her! Her whole body tingled with a shot of excitement, she was being trusted by her clanmates now. Deep down she felt undeserving of it though. Letting her eyes adjust, she faintly recognized Ryewhisker from around camp and theirs was a comforting scent from her kithood when Ridgeclan invaded. She did not know him personally though. They were a full warrior, and she was still an apprentice. "Hello Ryewhisker," her voice was soft and caring, watching as they tried to pass it off like their insomnia was of no real importance. "Are you okay? Not sleeping isn't healthy." Anyone could tell him that, but she was trying not to be rude with her soft request for more information. "It's better to treat the cause and not just the symptoms." She wished Lotusfire taught her that mantra, but instead, it simply came to her in her dreams - and it just seemed fundamentally right.

The brown-pointed tom heard the cheerful voice of the medicine cat apprentice. Even though he was expecting a reply, it still startled him a little bit as he had a small jerk at the mention of his name. "Hello, Ryewhisker," the calico gently spoke, the tom deciding that was his cue to come in and take a seat. They chose the nest that was the closest to the apprentice's position, so that she wouldn't have to move too much from her original position. "Are you okay? Not sleeping isn't healthy." The tom perked up at the ending comment. Of course the tom knew that no sleep was detrimental to his health, it had just become such an after thought. It all really began when he was an apprentice, so it was just second nature. "Y-Yeah, of course, I'm fine. I mean, no sleep is, you know, not great, but I have been able to manage somewhat." The tom paused, his awkward speech causing him to have a self-conscious feeling rush over him. "I-I, uh, i-if it ever gets really bad, I usually just get some herbs from Lotusfire to help. S-Some kind of berries, I think," they continued, before their ears twisting on their head. They were oblivious to the idea that Spottedpaw was prodding them for more information. "It's better to treat the cause and not just the symptoms." However, with the statement from the young cat, the tom became more slightly aware of what was going on. Slightly. He still didn't really have a clue, to be honest. But all they knew is that the word "cause" kept running in their brain over and over. Truth be told, he knew the real reason that he couldn't sleep. The scars on his shoulders were a permanent reminder of the fear. While he witnessed his mentor's body being dragged into the camp, Ryewhisker was still scared that Boulderclaw was still alive somewhere. The torment that the warrior had put them through as an apprentice still lingered in their head, and it prevented them to sleep. However, the thought of it alone was enough to send him into a blind anxiety attack. Ryewhisker tried their best not to think about it too much, but they knew they would have to try to dance around the idea with Spottedpaw, so that they didn't reveal too much. "O-Oh, the cause of not sleeping?" The tom mewed, with their head slightly dipping into a tilt. "Well, let's see, uh. I mean, the war was a good reason to not sleep. I-It was all so sudden when it happened, and the w-weavers were trying to repair the camp as fast as possible." Ryewhisker paused, his fur standing up on his back from anxiety. "And... uh... nightmares. Uh, yes! N-Nightmares from the w-war, it's why I can't sleep. T-That's the exact reason. Yep." The weaver knew that Spottedpaw would see through his bold-faced lie, but he had to try something to steer her off the path of trying to talk about his late mentor.

The young molly cocked her head inquisitively as Ryewhisker approached, settling in the nest next to her as they gave their reasonings why. …Ryewhisker wasn't a very good liar. She could smell the faint twinges of his fear scent as they spoke. Spottedpaw didn't want to make them uncomfortable, but a good medicine cat would try to get to the bottom of the riddle, yes? For their betterment. But, there was always time for that in a moment. At the mention of berries, the apprentice wracked her mind to see if she could remember what fruit he was referring to. The fact that she couldn't recall any berry being used for sleep made her anxious in turn. She didn't want to look foolish. Ryewhisker might be more forgiving than Lotusfire, but she still didn't like the blank that was being drawn. "...Do you happen to know what kind of berry it was, or its name?" She spoke more quietly as she continued, her voice weighted with embarrassment. "With leaf-bare coming…many of the dried berries look the same…"

Ryewhisker slowly released some tension from his back as the apprentice seemed to not question his awkward answer. While they knew that they hadn't completely convinced the she-cat that he wasn't hiding something, it got the worry away from him to have to explain himself. For now. "...Do you happen to know what kind of berry it was, or its name?"He was oblivious to the fact that she didn't know off the top of her head what the herb was. But, being a weaver himself, he never really paid attention to what Lotusfire gave him. It could have been deathberries, and the tom wouldn't have batted an eye. Ryewhisker looked toward the calico, with confusion written on his grin. "Heh, w-well, I'm no medicine cat obviously... since you and Lotusfire are. Which you know, y-you know that, given you are sitting there." A small chuckle came from their mouth, before they realized how dumb they were being. "I-I, uh... sorry, talking isn't really my strong suit. That's more for my sister, Doeflame." Another pause. Doeflame had been so busy, he hadn't seen her that much. "B-But, I can understand how they look the same. I-I could never be a m-medicine cat. Leaves look like leaves to me. But... I think that it started with a P-... Like, puh... puh.... pop... poppy... pup." He continued to try to figure out the name of the herb, even though he had already said it. The more time they took, the less likely he would have to talk about Boulderclaw.

As she listened to Ryewhisker call her a medicine cat, butterflies swam in her stomach. Would she ever truly be a medicine cat in her own right? She had only been training with Lotusfire for what seemed like the blink of an eye. "I-I, uh... sorry, talking isn't really my strong suit..."That's okay," she smiled warmly, before anxiously padding the ground with one of her front paws. "To be honest, I'm not good with talking either. At least…not about what the other apprentices talk about." Hunting, battle moves, anything that wasn't medicine or told to her by an elder went completely over her head. She hadn't many friends as a kit, none that stayed with her to apprenticehood, anyway - they then seemed to make new friends, forgetting her. Her anxious pawing stopped as Ryewhisker landed on the 'berry' in question, her eyes lighting up again. "Poppy! Yes."She turned to go deeper in the den, talking over her shoulder. "Poppy plants don't have berries. It's the seeds we give. But the seeds rattle in a sort of berry-like shell. So I can see the confusion."She stopped again, turning around and going back to Ryewhisker. Spottedpaw had been remembering how a few days ago some of the elders were talking amongst themselves - certain Dewsplash was addicted to poppy seeds. She'd heard before they were addictive, but she hadn't given it much thought until now. Poppy was mainly used for pain - she didn't want Ryewhisker developing a resistance to it from too frequent use. "...Poppy can be addictive. I'm sure Lotusfire warned you already though." She could very well give the tom some and have them be on their way, but Spottedpaw wanted to try and persuade them they didn't need it. "...If it's nightmares you are worried about, I can sleep with you if you like?" She padded closer, behind Ryewhisker. Oh that would be great. She hadn't snuggled next to another cat since her days in the nursery. The naive apprentice had no idea her words could be taken with a different meaning.

They watched as a smile stretched across her maw. He felt a warmth in the presence of the she-cat, something he had not felt with other cats before. Spottedpaw was caring, passionate, and gentle. It was no question that he wanted to seek a friendship with her, once the time was right and he was able to sleep. The apprentice speaking about her own troubles with talking to cats made them feel like they weren't alone. "Oh, I-I understand that!" he exclaimed, a new bout of excitement seeming to come over him. "Doeflame is th-the same way. She is a warrior, uh, obviously, as you probably know. Meanwhile, I became a w-weaver... after..." they paused, a blank stare washing over their face for a moment. "B-But I like being a weaver. I-I just don't understand what my sister talks about when she mentions battle moves," he chuckled, watching the apprentice for a reaction. But before that could happen, the apprentice whisked away. Spottedpaw mentioned that it was poppy seeds, rather than berries, but Ryewhisker had no clue. "O-Oh, sorry for the confusion. Obviously, yo-you are the medical expert," he embarrassingly laughed under his breath. However, he grew restless when he didn't see her bring them to him. His paws shuffled anxiously. Lotusfire usually didn't say much when he came to the medicine cat den. The medicine cat would take Ryewhisker's request, gather the seeds, and they would hand it off to him. But it seemed like it wasn't going to be the case with the apprentice. The pointed tom was taken aback from the comment from Spottedpaw. The tom became flustered, before looking at the she-cat awkwardly. "I-I-I-I, uh, appreciate it. But you see, uh, I-I'm not really into... uh," they looked at the calico, hoping that she would catch their drift rather quickly. Love wasn't something that he had thought about, but she-cats were definitely not on his interest list. "P-Plus, you're a medicine c-cat." Of course she knew that medicine cats could be in relationships, so they hoped that this was just a big misunderstanding.

Spottedpaw waited contentedly for the weaver's response, watching as they turned to look at her, their face confusingly distressed. "I-I-I-I, uh, appreciate it. But you see, uh, I-I'm not really into... uh,"Her smile slowly began to drop as her brow furrowed in thought. What was Ryewhisker on about? He was already quite jumpy, but her words seemed to send the tom into a new fit of nerves. "P-Plus, you're a medicine c-cat." Well…a medicine cat apprentice, but. That's why she was offering in the first place. She cared about her clanmate's well-being. Oh. Oh, no.He couldn't think… Spottedpaw nearly lept out of her skin at the realization, a visible start shaking her frame as it washed over her. Ryewhisker meant sleep together like mates might. Oh no.
Oh no. Oh no. Oh no."That's n-!" she chirped with a hiccup. Mortified, her ears grew hot and they pressed back to her skull, fighting the urge to make herself as small as possible. She couldn't speak. "...I…I…I…I…I meant like friends! Or siblings! L…l…like kits do! Not adults!" Tears began to well up in her eyes. She was dying. This was what dying felt like, right? Medicine cat code aside, Spottedpaw hadn't really been given much of an opportunity to view other cats in romantic ways. She thought some of the older cats were both pretty and handsome, but it was mostly in an aspiring way, nothing else. "I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to make you think that. I just don't want you to end up dependent on poppy seeds." She couldn't meet Ryewhisker's gaze, instead she kneaded the nest moss anxiously. "Please don't tell Lotusfire." She pleaded with the weaver. Tell the medicine cat 'what' she didn't know, but should word of this get out surely Lotusfire would find a way to punish her. She had never given them a reason to punish her before, and seeming to act against the code in such a significant way would surely be a reason to confront her. Lotusfire already frightened her sometimes, she couldn't imagine them when they had actual ammunition to fire. What if they told Hailstar? What if she couldn't be a medicine cat anymore? "Please," she squeaked again, clearly still distraught.

The pointed tom realized his mistake when Spottedpaw was stumbling over her words over and over again. Oh, Starclan, they really messed up. Ryewhisker knew what it was like to be humiliated and embarrassed, as a lot of the apprentices would tease him about his 'mishaps' with thorn bushes. They always said that his name would be Ryethorn at the rate of his scars. "H-H-Hey! Spottedpaw, it's okay," they started, trying to help the medicine cat apprentice calm down. He knew that she meant nothing by her comment, and it was quite warming to the tom that a cat would do that for him. Other than his sister and his mentor, he never really got close to a cat or had a cat care so deeply about him in that way. "I-I-I realize now how you meant it, it's okay. I-I promise." He carefully moved closer in front of her, giving her ear a small lick to comfort her. "I won't t-tell Lotusfire, don't worry. They always seem to know everything, but that's one thing they don't need to know." Ryewhisker didn't like Lotusfire that much. They reminded him too much of Boulderclaw. "W-What if I told you the real reason that I can't sleep?" they proposed. It would be a compromise for the embarrassment that Ryewhisker felt like they had put the younger cat through. "W-When I was an apprentice, I was given the mentor of Boulderclaw. I-I know that you might have never heard of him, I don't know. He was killed when you were just born." A pause, as he battled the panic that was building in his chest. It felt like their heart might explode. "T-T-The apprentices always told stories that he would sharpen his claws with his apprentice's bones, and that he works them from dawn to dusk. They were tales, but they rang true in some regard." The tom paused again, before lowering himself into a tight loaf. "Training was always... me-met with claws. Boulderclaw said it was to prepare me for a real battle. I-I had to excuse the scars as me being clumsy or running into thorn patches. B-B-But one day, he went too far." Ryewhisker then turn to glanced at the deep pink scars that ran down both of their shoulders. "I-I told Lotusfire everything, and some warriors went to go look for Boulderclaw after he ran off. But, they said he was killed at the border by something." A gulp. "B-B-But, I feel like he is still here... you know?" Ryewhisker looked toward Spottedpaw, with worried and tired eyes. "I-I saw his body from the medicine den when they brought him back. However, I always feel like his ey-eyes staring from behind me... does that make sense?"

The apprentice couldn't look Ryewhisker in the eye, but out of the corner of her increasingly blurry vision, she saw them rush around to face her more squarely before feeling a soft lick behind one of her black ears. It did comfort her, some, but not more than the weaver's promise not to tell Lotusfire. They were right, they always seemed to know everything. What if other cats had witnessed it and told them instead? What if other rumors started? "Thanks," she mewed softly - her voice shaking with her body. "W-What if I told you the real reason that I can't sleep?" Spottedpaw lifted her head silently, using a paw to wipe away the moisture from her gaze, only nodding her desire to hear Ryewhisker's story. They were correct in that she had never heard of the warrior called Boulderclaw, but as he continued - their tales of horror in the apprentice den reminded her of her time in the nursery. There weren't many kits her age when she resided there, but as talk of her dreams started stirring around camp and whispers about having her become a medicine cat became louder and louder. She remembered how some of the older apprentices would wish her luck in having Lotusfire as a mentor, some even pitying her that such a calm and sweet kit would get a cold and hardened teacher. Truth be told, Lotusfire had always been rather intimidating. She saw them come in to help the elders long before she was apprenticed, a scowl seemingly permanently etched onto their face. But the more and more time she spent alone with them, the more she started to question her uneasiness. As the tom pressed himself into a loaf, Spottedpaw had better access to view the scars Ryewhisker talked about. It was hard to imagine. Not that she did not believe the weaver, but that a cat could be so cruel to another. Especially one of the same clan, one who was supposed to help, not hurt. She couldn't fathom Boulderclaw's logic. Using claws would only put his apprentice at risk for infection. Ryewhisker could die. The tom was a kind cat, a peaceful sort, like her. Spottedpaw was glad Ryewhisker was safe now. Physically at least. But that certainly explained their nightmares. "That's awful Ryewhisker. I'm glad you are safe now though. And happy weaving." She hiccuped, still wrapping her head around the situation. "No…no I know what you mean." She finally looked up at the young weaver. Her voice got much quieter. "...I feel like Lotusfire dislikes me. They always send me away - I don't even sleep in the medicine den. But despite that, I always feel like they are watching me even when I'm all alone. Waiting for me to fail. But I don't want to fail. I want to make them happy, but I'm not, I know it……Was Boulderclaw ever like that with you?"

While Spottedpaw was wrapping her head around the tom's story, they were doing the same, as much as they hid it in their face. It hadn't been that long since he had told the story to Sparkpaw, the apprentice in PrairieClan. But it still felt like thorns striking his heart every time that he spoke about it. Was it something that he would always have to deal with? Would they have to tell the story over and over again, just to feel the same way after? Hurt. Panicked. Scared. As Spottedpaw extended her condolences to his situation, all he could do was nod softly. She was correct that he was happy as a weaver. Being a weaver gave him something to focus on and a goal that was outside of the norm of being a warrior. While he was decent at his training, he didn't feel right in that position. His sister, Firewing, though, was a natural. "I am happy as a weaver," he simply stated. His thoughts then lingered to his lessons with Poppyfern. They remembered that they were so scared and timid around her at first, scared that she would have lashed out at them for any mistake that they made, like Boulderclaw. But she wasn't like that. It changed his perspective on being a member of the clan, and the clans in general. "P-Poppyfern helped me a lot. I-I-I finally felt like a part of the clan. Not just a kittypet with no fighting skills."But then Spottedpaw continued and talked about Lotusfire. They were similar, more than Ryewhisker had originally thought. "He was like that," the tom concluded to the apprentice, as she asked if their mentor was anything like the medicine cat. The weaver took a hard gulp, connecting the dots between the two. "W-While it seems that Lotusfire doesn't resort t-to physical violence... right?" he paused, hoping that the calico she-cat didn't have to go through the same touture as him, "I-I mean, it's the same. There's still pain, just not in the same way."A tom with not much to say, he looked toward Spottedpaw, but with optimism instead of sorrow. "B-But, you know, if I was able to outlive my mentor, y-you will yours too. I-I-I MEAN, uh, you know... I don't hope for Lotusfire to die, even if th-they is a mouse-heart. But, I-I hope you know what I mean. I-If I can do it, you can do it." Ryewhisker's ears fell, with a small smirk to cover up his embarrassment. "And I will a-always be around camp if you need me."The tom slowly rose to his feet. They noted that they had not been able to get poppy seeds from the she-cat, but it was okay. He could go without them today, he believed. While sharing his story always made them panic, they felt a certain... bliss for getting it off their chest. "D-Do you think you could come to the warrior's den tonight?" Ryewhisker spoke, looking toward the medicine cat apprentice. "I-I will make sure that my nest is big enough for both of us. A little f-friend sleepover?" He chuckled a bit, with the moment that the two shared just moments beforehand.
